The Member of Parliament (MP) for Adansi Asokwa, Kobina Tahir Hammond, widely known as KT Hammond, during parliamentary proceedings on Tuesday, June 25, 2024, expressed his displeasure about not being formally recognized by his new title, Alhaji, after completing the Hajj pilgrimage.

KT Hammond, who is also the Minister for Trade and Industry, while addressing the House, questioned why the parliamentary record did not indicate his new title, which is given to every Muslim who completes the Hajj pilgrimage.

He then went on to demand that 'Alhaji' should be officially included in his name within parliamentary records.

"I am the new Alhaji in Parliament. Why has that not been announced and recorded? I'm told that this has already preceded my attendance in Parliament and that it was announced. Is that true? The news of where we have come from, has it not been announced.

"Mr. Speaker, has it not been announced that there are new Alhajis in this chamber? He hasn’t announced that. I don’t know why. I want it recorded and recorded properly that we have new Alhajis," he said.

The MP, amid heckling from the other side of the House, proceeded to direct the Clerk of Parliament to ensure that his title as Alhaji is reflected in official parliamentary documents.

"Mr. Speaker, that’s the information for the House. Mr. Clerk, the record should accordingly reflect the new title, Alhaji. You should make sure that it is properly reflected," he added.
