You’ll fail in court if you rush – Governance expert on possible prosecution of corrupt Akufo-Addo appointees

A governance expert, Kwasi Nyarko, has called on Ghana’s President-Elect, former President John Dramani Mahama, not to cave in to public pressure by rushing the prosecution of members of the Akufo-Addo government who may have engaged in corrupt practices.

According to Kwesi Nyarko, a rushed process in prosecuting corrupt members of the outgoing government will most likely fail in court.

“You have won the 2024 elections overwhelmingly. The expectations are very high. Don’t give in to the pressure; don’t fail. Certainly, hold past officials accountable for their stewardship, but tread cautiously. Don’t rush the process; do a thorough investigation, get strong evidence. That is what the court wants, or else it will be business as usual. I wish you all the best,” he is quoted as saying in a report by 3news.com.

Ghanaians went to the polls on December 7, 2024, to elect a new president and Members of Parliament.

Mahama, who was the flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress, won the race, according to the results declared by the Electoral Commission.

He beat 12 other candidates with 56.55% of the total valid votes.

His closest contender, Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia of the ruling New Patriotic Party, obtained 41.61% of the total valid votes cast.
