I remember the time of Jeremiah John Rawlings when students were fed on Pinto beans, Imported Yellow Corn that were to be used as feed for Cattle was fed to students in the Boarding Schools twice a day. It was just nasty and horrible. Yes such food was horrible. Unfortunately, that was our bed option and it was the best because our family members were having it hard and some had to queue for uncooked Ga and Fante Kenkey. Yes, that was when Koko Sakota started. Yes, sometimes students ate Porridge and Rice Porridge without milk. We suffered most in Ghana because Ghana was broke and the West, especially the USA put sanctions on Ghana because of Rawlings’ relationship with Quathaffi and their attempts to finance military takeovers in Africa and draw such African countries to the then USSR. Togo, B’Faso, Côte d’Ivoire, Senegal , Benin and even Chad and Niger did not experience any famine or food shortages. Yes, that was when the term Rawlings’ Chain came to be used.
Parents should know that school food can be nutritious but they are not the best and enough for their students. Now that parents are not paying school fees, they should make sure their children’s Chop Boxes are well stuffed before they go to school. They should oftentimes visit their children at the Boarding Schools and replenish their supplies. There are sometimes hundreds of students in a Boarding School and parents should know that their children cannot have the best food, especially when food grants for students come late or they even don’t get to the school until after many semesters.
