Had he respected the legitimate concerns of Ghanaians, matters would not have escalated to this point.
If you claim to be more Ghanaian, which I doubt, you would also understand why many citizens are alarmed by the actions of someone who, as a visitor, claims kingship over a group with no recognized historical or geographical roots in Ghana, while appointing regional sub-chiefs. Such actions directly contravene the laws and traditional governance structures of the Republic of Ghana. Even our highly revered traditional rulers do not appoint regional chiefs outside their jurisdictions, let alone a foreign national.
Ghana already faces internal challenges relating to ethnicity and chieftaincy disputes. The emergence of new claims to tribal or territorial authority by non-citizens risks compounding these tensions. Advocating for African unity does not mean disregarding the sovereignty, safety, or cultural integrity of host nations. Even within the European Union, where free movement of persons is enshrined, citizens are still bound by the laws of their host countries. No serious country values foreigners more than its own citizens. It is only in Ghana that foreigners come and think that they are above the locals. This cannot continue.
This individual’s action, which has been criticized even by responsible members of his own community, would not be tolerated in his country of origin, nor in any nation that values order and rule of law. Ghana must not be an exception. While we remain proud of our tradition of hospitality, we must ensure that all who live within our borders, citizens and foreigners alike, do so lawfully and respectfully.
Foreigners are always welcome in Ghana. However, they must respect the country’s sovereignty, laws, and traditions. Ghana is our only home, and we have a collective duty to protect its peace and dignity, peacefully, but firmly.
