The Deputy Director of Elections and IT of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Rashid Tanko-Computer, says the emerging United Party (UP) reflects the values once exhibited by the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the early years of Ghana’s Fourth Republic.

Speaking on TV3's NewDay on Thursday, January 15, 2025, he said the UP's conduct, messaging and public posture reminds him of the NPP in the early nineties.

“I’m happy UP is coming up. If you look at their posters and the way they carry themselves, you can see that they hold on to the ethics of the original NPP that we used to know,” he said.

Tanko-Computer recalled how the branding strategies and campaign messaging of the NPP in the year 2000, including popular campaign songs associated with former President John Agyekum Kufuor, had a strong impact on the political landscape at the time.

“The way they handled themselves back then, I’m seeing it again in the UP people,” he stated.

Tanko-Computer further questioned claims that the current NPP has undergone a positive transformation.

According to him, that ideological change must still align with core ethical principles.

“When you say you are transforming, you must go through ideological beliefs that still conform to your ethics. But some professors, party groups and virtual members say they are no longer seeing those values in the party,” he stated.

Tanko-Computer also stated that the direction that the NPP is taking could weaken Ghana's democracy.

"The NPP, the path they are going, they are rather going to make NDC a one-party state in Ghana, and that is what we are avoiding,” he added.

His comments come in the wake of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) initiating disciplinary proceedings against Professor Kwabena Frimpong-Boateng over his description of the party as a “fake party” and allegations he made of irregularities in the 2023 presidential primary of the party.
