The Minister of Sports and Recreation, Kofi Adams, has disclosed that former First Lady Nana Konadu Agyeman-Rawlings did not inform him of her decision to leave the National Democratic Congress (NDC), despite their close working relationship.

Speaking on ChannelOne TV’s TheUpsideDown on April 12, 2026, Adams said he shared a strong political bond with Nana Konadu, even playing a key role in her campaign when she contested for the party’s leadership.

According to him, his support for her bid came at a significant political risk, particularly because she was challenging a sitting president at a time when the party’s delegate system made such a contest extremely difficult.

Adams explained that the NDC’s structure at the time allowed only a limited number of constituency executives; about seven per constituency, to vote, which he described as a major disadvantage for any challenger.

On whether Nana Konadu discussed her eventual exit from the party with him, Adams was emphatic that no such conversation took place.

“No, the conversation of leaving the NDC was not had. The whole idea was to have a movement,” he indicated.

Kofi Adams, who is also the Member of Parliament for Buem, added that earlier reform efforts within the party had led to divisions, with some members opting to leave and form new political groups when attempts at internal change proved unsuccessful.

He said Nana Konadu Agyeman-Rawlings later concluded that reforming the party from within was no longer feasible, which ultimately led to her departure.

Reflecting on her later years, he expressed the belief that she may have been on the path to rejoining the NDC before her passing.

“It’s unfortunate that God took her away at a time when, I believe, in a few more months, we could have seen her fully rejoin the party,” he added.
