Afenyo-Markin demands AG appear before Parliament over Miracles Aboagye's arrest

Following the arrest and detention of NPP Communications Director Dennis Miracles Aboagye, Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin has called on the Attorney General to appear before the House to brief Members of Parliament on EOCO's activities.

He further demanded an end to what he described as "Rambo-style" law enforcement.

Speaking in Parliament on July 14, 2026, the Effutu MP urged the Speaker to urgently programme the Minister for Justice and Attorney General to come and address the House, warning that the manner in which Aboagye had been handled posed a serious threat to Ghana's democracy.

"Mr. Speaker, what is happening to Miracles Aboagye is not good for our democracy. The Attorney General should come to this House and brief the House on the situation," he said.

Afenyo-Markin stated that the NPP was not opposed to accountability but took strong exception to how the arrest was conducted.

"We are not against accountability. We are against the Rambo style," he said.

The Minority Leader directed his remarks beyond party lines, issuing a pointed warning to his colleagues on both sides of the aisle that the current treatment of an opposition figure could one day be visited upon any of them.

"Our colleagues should not be up in arms. It can be you tomorrow. Let's be careful, my dear political colleagues. Let's be careful, Ghanaian political leaders. It can be somebody today. There is an election ahead. You can never tell. Don't let us encourage some of these excesses. And when we talk about it, don't look at it with a partisan lens. It can be you," he said.

He also raised concerns about the bail conditions imposed on Aboagye, describing them as punishing and inhumane given the personal circumstances the NPP communicator was already dealing with.

"He has a wife and children. Already, the man was affected by the floods. He lost everything. He's already traumatised. Then, to worsen it, you detain him for three days and you say if he wants his freedom, he should bring properties worth 50 million cedis. How do you do this?" he said.

Meanwhile, Aboagye has been released from custody after meeting the bail conditions. Videos on social media showed the communicator being escorted to a vehicle as he thanked supporters who had camped outside the building.
