Even if they arrest Bawumia, it will not intimidate us - NPP's Nana Kay

An aspiring National Organiser of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Nana Kwadwo Agyei Yeboah, popularly known as Nana Kay, has strongly criticised the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC), warning the government to stop using state institutions to intimidate opposition members.

He accused the government of gross lawlessness and of violating the human rights of opposition members through arbitrary arrests, intimidation, and persistent harassment without justifiable cause.

Speaking on Frontline on Rainbow Radio 87.5FM, Nana Kay alleged that the government is carrying out what he described as "Rambo-style" arrests against NPP members.

Despite these developments, he urged party supporters not to be discouraged. Instead, he encouraged NPP members to remain calm and steadfast, regardless of what he described as the government's hostile treatment of party officials.

Commenting on the reported arrest of Denis Miracles Aboagye, Special Aide to former Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, Nana Kay said the circumstances surrounding the arrest remain unclear. He explained that until Aboagye is granted access to his lawyers and family, the party cannot officially confirm the reasons for his detention.

Condemning what he described as the country's current political climate, Nana Kay said:

"The human rights we have protected and the NDC is destroying the democracy we have safeguarded for over three decades in just four years. I am afraid of what is happening."

He also criticised the Executive Director of the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO), Raymond Archer, cautioning him that political power is temporary and that he will not remain in office forever.

"Nobody is against EOCO carrying out its official duties. But let's assume, for the sake of argument, that the allegations against Miracles are true and that he was arrested over corruption-related issues. Is EOCO the appropriate institution to investigate such a matter? What exactly is happening?

"The second coming of President John Dramani Mahama was supposed to bring development, but instead, it appears everything possible is being done to destroy the NPP. We want to state categorically that the NPP is strong and resolute, and nothing can intimidate us. They can even arrest Dr Bawumia, but nothing will stop us from criticising this very wicked government.

"People have died as a result of floods in this country, yet the Greater Accra Regional Minister is receiving a Best Minister's Award," he added.

Nana Kay further accused the current administration of hypocrisy, citing Sammy Gyamfi, the Chief Executive Officer of COCOBOD, as an example.

He recalled that Gyamfi was among those who harshly criticised the previous NPP administration over flooding incidents, yet, according to him, Ghana is now experiencing even more severe flooding under the NDC government.

He maintained that the reported arrest of Miracles Aboagye amounts to intimidation and an abuse of power. He further alleged that the current administration's style of governance resembles that of former Ugandan dictator Idi Amin, whom he accused of ruthlessly suppressing political opponents who criticised his government.

In a related development, Nana Kay also condemned the manner in which broadcast journalist Okatakyie Afrifa-Mensah was arrested.

While stressing that he has no objection to law enforcement agencies carrying out lawful arrests where there are legitimate grounds, he alleged that Afrifa-Mensah was assaulted and manhandled by police officers during the arrest an approach he strongly condemned.
