Inside NDC elders' attempt to stop presidential race tensions – Kwesi Pratt shares details

Veteran journalist Kwesi Pratt Jnr has revealed that the Council of Elders of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) intervened last year to stop growing tensions over presidential ambitions within the party.

According to him, in a TikTok video sighted by GhanaWeb, the elders were concerned that the competition could divide the NDC, derail its work, and eventually push the party into opposition.

He said the Council of Elders took steps to address the situation and that at least one person involved in the presidential contest went before the council and promised to stop.

“In spite of caution by well-meaning people, it's getting worse. I know as a fact that the Council of Elders of the National Democratic Congress at some stage last year saw that this was causing a lot of problems and that it could divide the party, derail the party, and push the party into opposition, and decided to take some measures,” he stated.

“I know what measures they took, and I know who went to the Council of Elders of the NDC to promise that they were going to stop,” he said.

Kwesi Pratt, however, said the situation had not improved, with the competition becoming more intense.

He further questioned whether the assurances given to the elders had been honoured.

“Have they stopped? It's getting dirtier and dirtier every day. It's sickening,” he added.

Kwesi Pratt said the growing focus on presidential ambitions could also create the impression that some politicians were more concerned about gaining power than addressing the concerns of Ghanaians.

“What this tells the people of Ghana is that those at the helm of affairs don't care about us. It's about themselves, the ambition to become president,” he said.

He also questioned the understanding some presidential hopefuls had of the responsibilities that come with the presidency.

“And sometimes I wonder whether they understand what it means to be president. Sometimes I suspect that it's about just driving in convoys with sirens and so on, the trappings of office,” he stated.

Kwesi Pratt further questioned the capacity of some of the people seeking to become president.

“And quite frankly, some of the people who want to be president, look at them, do they look like presidents? Do you think they have the capacity to be president? What is this rubbish? And it's happening all the time,” he added.
