The result was a Cuban-style communist dictatorship, economic mismanagement, Rawlings' Chain" and abject poverty.
Those revolutionary youth who were wearing tire sandals and condemned market women to death for petty profiteering, are now billionaires enjoying power and money fraudulently. And throughout the period when Ghana was called "ojah krom", they perpetuated their rule through the gun and electoral malpractices. So, in order to get the best minds to go to parliament to help, the constituents must know the positions of these candidates. As of now, too much NOISE has been made by many of these kokotako candidates, "BUT WITHOUT ANY ORGANIZED DEBATES ABOUT THE ISSUES" for the people to know where they stand on issues.
See, we've always said that African, and for that matter Ghanaian, politics have been about personalities and nothing about ideologies or how to solve the myriads of problems facing the nation.
All you do is assemble these guys and gals and ask them tough questions as to how they would do something about our problems, if elected to Parliament. But, alas, the Negros are busy tearing each other apart—based on personalities; such as tribal affiliation, appearance (s/he is handsome, s/he short or tall), s/he has money, s/he respects or disrespects people, s/he gave us some sardines, kerosene, 2 bags or rice, 3 bags of cement, T-shirts, etc., etc. What the heck is that—politics or politricks?
Here are a few questions: How would the candidate {(1) solve the youth unemployment and housing problems? (2) Help reduce road accidents? (3) Improve our educational system? (4) CUT down the size of government—why do we need 700 people at the presidency? (5) Why should we have a minister, 2 deputy ministers and a director at a ministry, doing virtually nothing all day? (6) How can s/he help local businesses improve upon their products & services, instead of IMPORTING nearly everything including "turkey tails?" (7) What ideas do you have on “electing” instead of appointing Metropolitan and District chief executives MDCs? (8) What about term limits for MPs, since our presidents have term limits etc., etc?].
These MPs cannot, by themselves, accomplish these—especially while in opposition—but the point is “how much deep and ideological knowledge they have to contribute toward solving our many problems.” Secondly, public debates help the electorate to know “how these candidates can THINK FAST on their feet and how eloquent they are.” See, several MPs haven’t OPENED THEIR BIG MOUNTHS in parliament in years and such public debates can help open them up.

This opposition has been the most ineffective since independence. By this time tomorrow, the delegates will have decided his fate.
These delegates are cunning. Cash for votes should be outlawed. Candidates often have to borrow and remortgage their homes just to win primaries. Come election proper, they would have run out of much needed resources for the contest in 2016. Backward ever! The battle continues.
