Vince Cable: loss of polytechnics was a mistake
The conversion of polytechnics into universities has been lamented as a “poor decision” by the business secretary.
Mr Cable told the Association of Colleges’ annual higher education conference, held on 4 March, that the UK suffered from a lack of higher level and specialised apprenticeships.
“This goes back to…a very poor set of decisions in past generations to get rid of the polytechnics, because they performed a very important role,” Mr Cable said.
“Their disappearance and assimilation into universities has meant that there is nothing in the UK economy [like that] found in many continental European countries, where very high-level vocational skill training is provided.”
Mr Cable told the conference that the government was trying to plug this gap with the creation of national colleges, covering areas such as advanced manufacturing, several of which have developed out of further education colleges.
The minister said that meeting demand for higher level vocational skills, up to degree level, would be a key priority for English colleges, but acknowledged that this would take place against a “financially constrained” backdrop.
Mr Cable revealed that, when he came into office in 2010 and faced a 25 per cent cut in the budget for the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills, he had been advised to reduce funding for the further education and adult skills sectors by approximately 40 per cent. This was on the grounds that they were “less likely to notice than universities”, he said.
“I made the decision to disregard this advice,” Mr Cable said. “The consequence was that most of the political pain was inflicted on universities, with consequences that we have seen reverberating to this day.”

If the purpose for the conversion is to ensure that Ghanaians have hands on training and skill needed to meet the current needs of industry. Then why change from poly? Kwasia okujeto, don't you know that Polytechnics institutions are there to serve the purposes of hands on training in career fields like mechanics, hairdressing, cooking, dressmakimg, plumbing, electronics, hvac, .....visit the website of any community college in Canada and tell me how they are any different than a Polytechnics in Ghana? Fucking thief! We don't want no t-poly wood measuring stick like we use to see your fellow jss classmates carrying all over place. JJ school kiddies!

Technical university is to combine hands-on training with research and run higher academic programmes such as PhD in Catering, Electrical, Civil, etc. with much emphasis on practice as is done in Germany. This does not mean that what the polytechnics are doing currently would be abandoned. Think of this conversion as an UPGRADE. The only thing that is constant is change. Takoradi Technical University (TTU) formerly Takoradi Polytechnic is in the offing.Watch out for innovative solutions to the myriad of problems confronting Ghana.Enough of the cynicism.

Currently the same public universities lecturers and unqualified people are teaching in our polytechnics. Even our universities are struggling to ascertain the requisite lecturers to teach in many of our university programs. The same people have to do part-time in some of these polytechnics. You can imagine the consequences. Most of the PhDs this young boy us talking about have doubtful PhDs from tom and jerry institutions. Simply, we do not have the requisite manpower to teach these technical programs at the highest level. Our university polytechnics will turn to mainstream universities if we are not careful. This has happened the world over. The world 'university' lends itself to research unless the school can't compete. Even advanced countries could not control this (see UK). We do not have to be myopic and concentrate our benchmarking exercise on European countries though. Look at north america too. Canada has some good polytechnics like SAIT and NAIT worth exploring. Check Rensselaer Polytechnic in new york, Worcester Polytechnic,California Polytechnic State University,Polytechnic Institute of New York University all in the USA. We need to expand our consultations.

Dear Minister, after the conversion of name what is the guarantee that the expected results would be achieved? What extra efforts are we putting in place to make this happen. Bear in mind that the mere conversion in itself would not bring about the desired change. We have seen things like these over the years but we are still where we are as a nation.
