Allegedly an al-Qaeda agent, Hassan Ghul born Mustafa Hajji Muhammad Khan,[1] was also identified as a member of Ansar al-Islam.[2] His nationality was reported as Saudi Arabian,[3] Yemeni,[4][5] Pakistani[5][6] or Egyptian.[7][8] His testimony was a critical factor in identifying the secret location of Osama Bin Laden in Abbottabad.
Captured by Kurdish anti terror and turned over to American forces in 2004, Ghul was stated to have been as lowly as a "courier" who ran packages and delivered letters for al-Qaeda members. Ghul held such high ranks as "top lieutenant", "second-in-command" or "trusted emissary" of everyone from Abu Musab al-Zarqawi to Osama bin Laden to Khalid Sheikh Mohammed.
He was held at a CIA black site for two years, before being turned over to a Pakistani prison system.[9] It was during this time of detainment by the CIA in early 2004, but before he was subjected to "enhanced interrogation" techniques, that Ghul listed al-Kuwaiti as a close associate of bin Laden.[10] CIA records show that Ghul was not the first source of the name "al-Kuwaiti," which was also provided in 2002 by another detainee, Abu Zubair al-Ha'ili, who was being held by a foreign government.[11] Intelligence agents intercepted a satellite phone call [12] made by Osama bin Laden's bodyguard in 2010 which led to the surveillance of a courier that in turn led intelligence operatives to Osama bin Laden's compound.[13]
Ghul was killed by a CIA drone strike in North Waziristan in October 2012.[14]
Ghul was first mentioned in the 9/11 Commission, where he was stated to have led three people, including Mushabib al-Hamlan, to a waypoint controlled by Abu Zubaydah.[15]
He was captured on January 23, 2004[16] by Kurdish anti terror, possibly associated with the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan,[17] at a checkpoint near Kalar, at the Iranian border after police sent a fax to American CIA officials to confirm his photograph. There are contradicting claims that he was caught entering Iraq to bring al-Zarqawi money and bomb schematics[18] or that he was caught leaving Iraq bringing al-Zarqawi's progress report on successful suicide bombings into Iran.[7]
Ghul was carrying a USB flash drive and two CDs, one allegedly including a 17-page progress report believed to have been written by al-Zarqawi, claiming responsibility for suicide attacks in Iraq. US Intelligence officials have contradicted the accepted story, stating that the progress report was instead found in an abandoned safehouse in Baghdad.[19][20] In addition, the US military provided the media with "photocopies of the original handwritten Arabic letter" which were then translated, muddying the claim that it had been a computer document.[21] A notebook in his satchel also revealed a number of names and phone numbers of suspected associates.[22]
Kurdish forces immediately turned Ghul over to the American military, and he was interrogated while still in the country.[19][23] Although he may have been cooperative with the military interrogation, his questioning revealed little.[24]

The issue is not Ghana benefiting from such irresponsible transfers of hardcore rejects into the country. It is commonsense. These are known hardcore religious extremists and terrorists. Why will the USA congress and senate vote not to allow them into mainland USA? None of the NATO countries want them. Even their own Arab cousins do not want them in their various countries. Why Ghana, a poor country with no technology to track their activities? If it is not due to greed and stupidity, then I don't know why. Yes, I shall repeat that we have foolish and irresponsible people in government. We are now importing bomb makers, suicide bombers, rapists and extremists who take delight in mass murder into our country. What the hell is wrong with Ghana? One religious extremist is even more than dangerous. What do we need Yemeni and Syrian fighters in Ghana for? Some are talking of humanitarian reasons. Damn humanitarian reasons. My anger is not against USA Congress and Senate but the politicians in Ghana. The Americans are smart to know how dangerous these terrorists can be and so did not want them anywhere in their territory. Even some states in the USA and their governors are against accepting Syrian and Yemeni refugees and have pledged that if Obama issues any executive order to bring such refugees into their country, they will not allow state workers to handle anything about them, including their benefits and even usage of the state's facilities. Our government however is so greedy and corrupt that they did not factor the dangers that Ghana will reap if such persons are allowed into the country. They only think of the amount of money that USA and the UN will give them so that they can embezzle. They do not think of the security of Ghana. One extremist can indoctrinate and train hundreds of people to become terrorists. That is what is driving me crazy now. There are hundreds of people in Ghana who are unemployed and need employment and other assistance but receive none. Why can't the government of Ghana take care of them for humanitarian reasons? A new report from Director of National Intelligence James Clapper claims 116 detainees released from Guantanamo Bay have returned to the terror battlefield.
The report says 116 of 647 former detainees are "confirmed of re-engaging," a rate of 17.9 percent.
Another 69 former detainees, which amounts to 10.7 percent, are "suspected of re-engaging."
Based on those findings, the report concludes that some detainees released from the prison camp on Cuba will try to return to their lives as terrorists once they are transferred out of the prison known as Gitmo.
"Based on trends identified during the past 11 years, we assess that some detainees currently at GTMO will seek to re-engage in terrorist or insurgent activities after they are transferred," the report reads. "Transfers to countries with ongoing conflicts and internal instability as well as active recruitment by insurgent and terrorist organizations pose particular problems.
"While enforcement of transfer conditions may deter re-engagement by many former detainees and delay re-engagement by others, some detainees who are determined to re-engage will do so regardless of any transfer conditions, albeit probably at a lower rate than if they were transferred without conditions."
The report says 110 detainees had returned to the fight before Jan. 22, 2009, while another six did the same between that date and Jan. 15, 2015.
The briefing promises to declassify an updated copy of the report "not less frequently than once every six months."
Of the 116 detainees who are confirmed to have returned to terrorism, 25 are now dead, 23 are in custody, and 68 are not in custody.
