The State Housing Company (SHC) under the Ministry of Works and Housing, has partnered with the Ghana Medical Association to construct 200 homes in the Greater Accra Region exclusively for medical doctors.
This initiative is part of the Government's National Affordable Housing Program and aims to address the housing needs of healthcare professionals, providing them with comfortable and convenient living arrangements.
The collaboration seeks to attract and retain talented doctors, ultimately improving the quality of healthcare in Ghana.
On Wednesday, the State Housing Company (SHC) led by Managing Director Kwabena Ampofo Appiah, engaged with the Ghana Medical Association, represented by President Dr Frank Seribour, to sign the contract for the commencement of the projects for the doctors.
Earlier this year, President Nana Akuffo Addo and Minister of Works and Housing Francis Asenso-Boakye launched the National Affordable Housing Program dubbed ‘My Home, My Peace,’ which adopts a pragmatic approach to tackle the affordability gap and improve access to housing for Ghanaians.
President Akufo-Addo during the sod-cutting ceremony for the Pokuase Housing Project in the Greater Accra Region on Tuesday (August 1, 2023), said his government’s determination to provide affordable housing to all Ghanaians remains resolute.
President Akufo-Addo quoting from statistics that show that only five percent of Ghanaians can purchase a house without assistance, while 60 percent require support facilitated by the state and the remaining 35 percent of the population cannot afford a home even with government subsidies, said his government has designed a sustainable framework aimed at enhancing housing delivery in the country.
In this revised version, the Government will subsidize the housing units with land and infrastructure which is to absorb a critical component of the construction cost. The private sector will complement these efforts by raising funds to build the apartments on cost cost-recovery basis.
The initial project under this revised programme entails the construction of eight thousand housing units on over 200 acres of land in Pokuase in the Greater Accra region and six thousand Housing units on 200-acre land in Dedesua in the Ashanti Region.
Mr. Asenso-Boakye on his side during the sod-cutting ceremony also emphasized the government's focus on providing affordable homes for ordinary Ghanaians.
He acknowledged that the pursuit of affordable housing in the country has encountered significant setbacks, pointing to the 5,000 housing units project in six different towns during President Kufuor's tenure, as well as the Saglemi Affordable Housing Project, initiated by Presidents Mills and Mahama.
