The 2022 edition of the “Light Up the City”, a beautification project has been launched at Place 100 in Accra close to the Ridge Roundabout with major streets in the national capital laced with decorative lights.
The ‘Light Up Accra City’ initiative forms part of the Accra Beautification Project introduced by the Accra Metropolitan Assembly and other partners, including Ecobank, and Jandel Limited (a décor, luxury, and lifestyle experience company).
The project, which started in 2019, is an initiative of Jandel Limited, and the Accra Metropolitan Area aimed at beautifying the city and promoting tourism through paintings and drawings.
Present at the event were Hon. Henry Quartey, Mayor of Accra Metropolitan Assembly, Hon. Elizabeth Sackey, Municipal Chief Executive for Korle Klottey. Mr. Nii Adjei Tawiah, CEO of other local Assemblies from the Greater Accra Region, and executives of other institutions present, the Managing Directors of Jandel, Mullen Lowe, BTL Acting Head, Marketing & Communications, Ecobank Ghana And Anglophone West Africa, Dr. Daniel Kasser Tee.
In a speech read on behalf of the Managing Director of Ecobank Ghana, Mr. Dan Sackey said "Unlike last year, when Ecobank supported the Light Up the City events in only Accra and Kumasi, we have decided to, once again, include Takoradi, as we had previously done in 2020. This year, therefore, marks the fourth consecutive year, since Ecobank first sponsored the “Light up the City” project in 2019, which was done for Accra alone”.
“It is our hope to continue participating in this annual event, which has been creating the needed excitement around the Christmas and new year festivities, since its inception. As a leading bank in Ghana, belonging to the leading Pan African banking group, Ecobank Transnational Incorporated, we see this as part of the bank’s corporate social responsibility activities, for which we often make investments in worthy charitable causes within the communities we operate in”.
He continued that “We do this in the hope of positively impacting the lives of people that we serve but also use such platforms as the launchpad to create awareness about our digital financial solutions that are deployed to help Ghana’s financial inclusion agenda. That is why Ecobank has, indeed, always taken up the key role of providing financial support for these events, from inception to date.
As we are well aware, Christmas celebrations in major cities, the world over, are always associated with street lighting, Christmas trees, fireworks, paintings, the show of love, and gifts, all done to commemorate the birth of Christ. This is also the time for us to appreciate God the Almighty, for his protection and blessings throughout the year and to pray for many more glorious years ahead”.
He further expressed that “I wish to salute and commend all partners, particularly, the various local assemblies for the wonderful collaboration with private sector entities, such as Ecobank, to make Ghana join the league of countries, were lighting up of cities during the festive seasons, of Christmas and New Year, have become normal annual calendar events”.
