Heritage Christian College (HCC), a university at Amasaman in Accra, has held its 4th graduation ceremony. The occasion also marked the 21st Commissioning Ceremony of Heritage Bible Institute (HBI). In all, 190 students graduated.

These were made up of 87 graduates who received Bachelor’s degrees awarded by KNUST and 103 Ministers of the gospel and Women in Ministry who received certificates in Christian ministry from HBI.

Heritage Christian College is accredited by the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC), formerly the National Accreditation Board (NAB) and affiliated with Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST).

It offers degrees in Bachelor of Business Administration (with options in Accounting, Banking and Finance, Human Resource, Marketing, and Business Information Technology Management); Bachelor of Information Technology, and Bachelor of Theology.

The President of the university, Dr. Samuel Twumasi-Ankrah, quoting from the novel, A Tale of Two Cities by Charles Dickens, compared the socio-political and economic conditions in Ghana today with those of 18th-century England and France as captured in the novel:

It was the best of times, it was the worst of times, it was the age of wisdom, it was the age of foolishness, it was the epoch of belief, it was the epoch of incredulity, it was the season of light, it was the season of darkness, it was the spring of hope, it was the winter of despair, we had everything before us, we had nothing before us.

“My dear graduands, such are the times you are graduating from school in case you’re not aware. And in times such as these, what must a graduate do?” He urged the students to use their God-given imagination to creatively envision job possibilities or opportunities to identify solutions to problems and thrive in the socio-economic quagmire.

“There is no guarantee of jobs for you, hence you must dream up jobs that you can create for yourselves; you ought to create in your mind the things you’re going to do in order make a living. The kind of dream or idea you formulate right now, and the size of that dream is what’s going to define and shape your life and set you apart from those who call themselves Unemployed Graduates Association.”

The Guest Speaker, Dr. Ernest Ofori Sarpong (CEO of Special Ice Ltd., Co-Founder of United Television (UTV), Best Point Savings and Loans), encouraged the students to take up entrepreneurship as the gateway to achieving economic security in Ghana and Africa at large. He advised them to bounce back if they hit a snag along the line as this would position them for success in their chosen fields.

He cited himself as an example of someone who is constantly learning new ways of improving himself, seeking out opportunities for business, ensuring ethical conduct in all his dealings, and deepening his faith in God to see him through various challenges in life.

Heritage Christian College envisions being the “flagship Christian University in Africa for the purpose of advancing the kingdom of Christ and national development.” It is anchored on the 5 C’s which are its Core Values (Conviction, Character, Compassion, Creativity, and Community).

Entrepreneurship is practically taught and vigorously promoted by the university. Since 2018, the university has awarded over GHc400,000 in grants to about 50 of its students whose business ideas were deemed viable through the HCC Start-up Challenge.

At the 4th graduation, GHc60,000 was awarded to a student entrepreneur, Prince Asempa Agyei for winning the HCC Start-up Challenge 2022 with his business idea of fish farming. Other student entrepreneurs in this year’s contest were recognized and encouraged to keep working at refining their business ideas.
