Press Release in condemnation of the Attorney General Marietta Brew Appiah-Oppong
PRESS RELEASE BY MAIKI CLUB (HOHOE-ZONGO YOUTH) ON THURSDAY 9TH JUNE, 2016 IN HOHOE
We have heard and read through the print and electronic media the recent unwarranted moves by the Attorney General to value and put for sale Mr. Alfred Agbesi Woyome’s residential property in Kpehe, Accra.
We see such an effort by the AG as very wicked knowing very well that Mr. Woyome committed no crime by going to court to have judgment against the state as clearly stated in the ruling of the Criminal Court that tried him, and the Court of Appeal where the AG exercised her right by going on appeal.
We have kept our cool for almost five years that the state has wrongly criminalized and put an innocent man before court with some fictitious charges because we believe in his innocence and believe Allah will vindicate him. We have always trusted him when he told us and the whole world that he committed no crime, and was indeed cleared by the courts.
Concerning the recent illegal and wicked action by the Attorney, with tacit support by some people in government, we do not want to say much but to send a clear message to especially the Attorney General, Mrs. Marietta Brew Appiah-Oppong that her actions and attempts to bring down Mr. Woyome is the most dangerous path to choose only aimed at destroying the NDC from the grassroots.
We are really unhappy as supporters of Mr. Alfred Agbesi Woyome at the grassroots about the way he is being handled, with attempts to sell his properties because of the Supreme Court judgment that the contract did not receive Parliamentary Approval and was declared null, void and of no operative effect. – IT IS WORTHY TO NOTE HERE THAT MR. WOYOME ARGUED AND STATED PUBLICLY AND IN COURT THAT HE IS NOT LINKED TO THE SAID WATERVILLE CONTRACT WHICH THE SUN ROSE FROM THE EAST TO LINK HIM TO.
From the Supreme Court’s judgment it arises that any work done by anybody or contractor concerning the construction of stadia for the CAN 2008 Tournament hosted by Ghana was illegal, and such people or companies are also supposed to be dragged to court on the basis of Article 181(5) of the Ghanaian Constitution.
The following questions are seriously begging for answers:
1. Why is Marietta Brew Appiah-Oppong not pursuing government officials in the previous regime who were negligent and did not send the contract to Parliament for Approval since it is not the duty of any contractor to send contracts to Parliament for approval before they execute?
2. Why has the AG failed to go after the Chinese company that did not take part in the bid/bidding process but finally were covertly awarded the contract for the stadia construction through a contract signed in China by the Ghanaian Ambassador there on behalf of Ghana since it also did not receive any Parliamentary Approval?
3. If the AG is saying the money paid to Mr. Woyome is stained and she wants to at all cost criminalize him; what happens to her and Tony Lithur since they were in court and benefitted from the same judgment debt money Mr. Woyome went to court to receive?
4. Is the Attorney General, Mrs. Marietta Brew Appiah-Oppong not working or acting in a conflict of interest position against Mr. Woyome?
We also want to know why the Attorney General and those who are pushing her are not very aggressive in pursuing the cases of Isofoton, Waterville, Jespong, Gyeeda, the NSS case, Drill Ship, MASLOC, and the numerous cocaine cases, and recently the $109 million BOST case..
It is evident that Marietta Brew Appiah-Oppong, Tony Lithur, and their collaborates are not interested and are definitely working in the interest of the state and for the fortunes of the NDC in the forthcoming November , 2016 general elections, but are only concerned in settling scores with Mr. Alfred Agbesi Woyome, hiding behind the ‘questionable’ Supreme Court judgment against him.
We are by our statement sending a clear message that there is a real danger to our democracy and young constitution when an Attorney General will be allowed with Government’s ‘decorous’ approval to be using her office for selective justice, and for vindictive activities against people she has issues with.
We are very sickened by the machinations against Mr. Alfred Agbesi Woyome by the state, led by Marietta Brew Appiah-Oppong and demand that every person in the NDC Government must get to know the real task ahead of us than the interest of trying to make a cheap political capital of Mr. Woyome’s Case.
We will be forced to reject the National Democratic Congress (NDC) massively at the polls if the unlawful and illegal acts of the AG cannot be stopped, because she has an interest we maintain is definitely not for state nor the NDC.
Consul Alfred Agbesi Woyome (Eagle) we the members of Maiki Club and the Zongo community are and be forever grateful to you, and also promise our unflinching support to you for your integrity and generosity. We remember when all others have given up on the needs of the grassroots you raised to the occasion; you sponsored majority of Ghanaians to the 2010 World Cup in South Africa; sponsored over 400 Muslims all over Ghana to Mecca to perform their annual pilgrimage, and you were even the one who came to the Volta Region during the 2012 electioneering campaign to demand us to vote massively for His Excellency John Dramani Mahama and the NDC even at the time elements within the NDC were fighting you tooth and nail to have you dead or in jail.
You came to Hohoe recently to advise us to follow and work with the NDC which led to the massive keep fit programme in Hohoe
We thank you for your clean heart towards humanity and we know through Allah there will be restitution for all you have lost during these difficult times.
Eagle, you are a great leader who champions the cause of the marginalized in society, for that reason Allah will also fight all your battles and set a table before you in the presence of your enemies.
God bless Ghana; God bless NDC; God bless us all.
