Members of the Ewe Association ushered into office the newly elected Queenmother and two sub-Queens two months after voting overwhelmingly to confirm them.

At a short ceremony, there was pouring of libation, holy men delivered invocations, and all the newly elected queens swore allegiance to uphold the constitution of the Ewe Association and serve diligently.

The new Queenmother will go by the royal name, Mama Nunyati I (Deborah Ameyedowo). Her right and left-hand Queenmothers are Mama Sedudzi I (Empress Mawusi Kudjawu) and Mama Semekor I (Rita Fiadzoe-Tawiah ), respectively.

The ceremony occurred at the Memorial Park Memorial Pavilion, 626 Wentworth Avenue, Calumet City, Illinois, 60409. The Vice President of the Association, Aurelia Attionu, presented and ushered them into office.

Members of the clergy in attendance prayed for progress and success during their term in office. By the current arrangement, Mama Sedudzi I and Mama Semekor I are the first and second inline, respectively, to represent the Ewe Association as Queenmothers in the absence of Mama Nunyati I.

The nomination by the elders of the Association and subsequent confirmation by all qualified members present became necessary due to the expiration of a special agreement that brought in Mama Awushie Adjaho I and Mama Edzeani I. That arrangement came to an end on June 30, 2023.

Therefore, for the smooth ascension and to prevent the problems associated with the nomination and acceptance of Queenmothers and at times chiefs, the elders of the Association decided to nominate the two sub-queen mothers as a more direct lineage of replacement for the Queenmother’s position. Also, the new arrangements promote unity and peace within the Association and infuse the youth into traditional leadership positions.

The current chief of the Ewe Association is Togbe Addo (Simon Odartey). His right and left-hand chiefs are Togbe Kutame (Dr. Mark Kutame) and Togbe Hadzide (Reuben Hadzide).

“This is magnificent; this makes me happy,” said Amitor Kotoka, a community member at the function.

The chief, Queen-mother, and elders of the Association have a range of ceremonial and practical duties. Some are:

1. Promote the culture, image, and traditions of Eweland.

2. Colorfully represent Ewe Traditional Council at every major public gathering.

3. Resolve all conflicts that may arise among members.

4. Seek and maintain peace and understanding among members.

With Fanfare, the Ewe Association has a new Queenmother and sub-queens.
