A four-day event called "Farming for the Future: Unlocking Opportunities in Crop Farming and Aquaculture for SMEs and Start-ups" has been launched by The People Building Institute in an effort to transform how people think about agriculture and address urgent issues like poverty and food scarcity in Africa.

According to Stephen Dotse, co-founder of PBI, the event seeks to advocate for agriculture as a realistic and bright career option for young people on the continent. With the help of prestigious partners, this effort is expected to open the door to a better future for African farmers.

“The motive is to promote agriculture in Africa because we want to do away with young people thinking agriculture is only for the people in the village,” said Dotse after the launch of the event and the institute in Accra over the weekend.

“Agriculture is actually the lifeline of the world, so, if we can get a lot of people to get into agriculture, we’ll be able to solve a lot of problems in Africa. So basically, this is our way of trying to alleviate poverty and the food shortage in Africa.”

He emphasized that over the years, some young people have ventured into agriculture but the lack of support has always been a bane. The challenge, when solved, according to Dotse, will inure to the benefit of the continent as many young people would find farming attractive and rewarding.

“You realise that every young person gets out of school and all they’re looking out for is a white-collar job. Now, that dynamic is actually changing,” said Dotse.

“Young people are getting into farming and they are beginning to love it but there are some shortfalls in that area too. Now, the only thing that is not making agriculture attractive anymore is the fact that there is no support. Once they have that support, they’ll be able to move forward.”

The seminar, scheduled to take place from 21st to 24th August 2023 at Alisa Hotel, North Ridge-Accra, will feature engaging panel discussions, practical workshops, and networking sessions.

Participants will have the chance to connect with industry experts, mentors, and potential investors, creating valuable networks and gaining insights into the agricultural sector's emerging trends and opportunities.

The seminar serves as a platform for young individuals interested in crop farming and aquaculture as viable business opportunities.

With a focus on unlocking opportunities and embracing innovation in the agriculture sector, the seminar will showcase the latest trends, technologies, and sustainable practices that can increase productivity, efficiency, and profitability for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) and start-ups.
