During this week of mourning at the tragic demise of the President of Ghana, Prof. John

Evans Atta Mills, the West Africa Network for Peacebuilding (WANEP) at both the regional

and national levels expresses profound condolences to the Family of the late President and

to the Government and people of Ghana.

A practicing peacebuilding organization with more than 500 member organizations across

West Africa, WANEP at all times has been inspired and motivated by the peacebuilding

efforts of President Mills. He never hesitated both at private and public encounters in his

exhortations to promote peaceful co-existence of the people of Ghana and the peace of the

West Africa sub-region. His demeanour, humility and integrity espoused the values and

principles of peace.

WANEP recalls the meeting of H.E. President Mills on 2

nd

December 2011 with the Secretary

General of the United Nations H.E. Ban Ki-Moon during which he made a pledge and invited

the international community to witness his commitment to ensure that the December 2012

general elections in Ghana will be peaceful.

Beyond speaking everyday about the importance of living in peace and unity, President Mills

lived and practiced the virtues of peace. Appropriately he earned the name the

Asomdwehene (The King of Peace). He was seen as a leader who strived to consolidate the

democratic credentials of Ghana. At this time of great loss and in expressing our sympathies,

WANEP appeals that the greatest honour that the people of Ghana can bequeath in the

celebration of the legacy of President Mills is to live everyday with respect and tolerance for

another. Above all, every Ghanaian should contribute and make an effort to ensure that the

December general elections are peaceful.

Signed:

Emmanuel Bombande

Executive Director, WANEP
