Afia Henewaa Annig, a 14-year-old student at the Obuasi Seventh-day Adventist Junior High School, on Wednesday 10th April, 2024, emerged winner of the Silver Jubilee edition of the Otumfuo Community Reading Challenge (OCRC) held in the Obuasi Municipality.
Launched in 2021, OCRC, an initiative of the Otumfuo Education Foundation, aims to enhance reading skills in Twi and English languages among junior high school students within the jurisdiction of the Asante Monarch, His Royal Majesty Otumfuo Osei Tutu II. The event runs across three stages: community-level, knockout, and grand finale.
The fifth community-level competition for this year's event was held at the Wesley Cathedral in Obuasi, where young Afia Henewaa Annig reached for the crown.
In an auditorium filled with educational stakeholders in the Obuasi Municipality, including the Municipal Director of Education, departmental heads at the education directorate, heads of basic schools, teachers, parents, and students, Afia's unrivalled alacrity and consummate reading skills were a delight to witness.
Standing out among twenty-eight contestants from various public junior high schools in the Municipality, Afia received the Konahene Special Award of GHC 500.00, along with exercise books, t-shirt and Twisco products. Her school, the Obuasi Seventh-day Adventist Junior High School, also received the Tredehene Special Award of Ghs 500.00.
Afia is poised to represent the Obuasi Municipality in the knockout stage of the competition scheduled for September 2024 at the renowned Prempeh Assembly Hall in Kumasi.
