A joint security task force led by the Amansie West District Security Council has arrested 22 Burkinabès involved in illegal mining, or "galamsey," activities in the district.

The suspects, aged between 17 and 40, were apprehended at Esaase Bontefufuo in the Amansie West District on Wednesday, October 22, 2025.

According to a report by 3news.com on October 22, 2024, some illegal miners managed to evade arrest by fleeing into the surrounding bush upon the arrival of security operatives.

The three-hour operation was conducted in direct response to escalating concerns over severe environmental destruction and water pollution caused by the illicit mining.

Speaking to reporters, the District Chief Executive (DCE) for Amansie West, Prince Morris Manu, expressed profound shock and sorrow after witnessing the extent of the environmental devastation firsthand.

"We received reports about the destruction caused by mining activities, but seeing the situation firsthand has left me heartbroken and shocked," the DCE lamented.

"The illegal miners have blocked portions of the river with sand to facilitate their illegal operations, and the damage to the environment is alarming," he said.
