Asankrangwa (W/R), Nov. 1, GNA - The Asankrangwa Secondary Technical School in the Wassa Amenfi West district has inaugurated an F.M radio station for the area.

The 'Velvet Beam' FM which transmits on 95.1 MHz, covers almost all the major towns in the Wassa Amenfi traditional area and beyond. Speaking to the Ghana News Agency after the inaugural and fund raising ceremony in support of the FM station at Asankrangwa, Mr D.K Sedanu-Kwawu, headmaster of the school, said the station was developed from old and abandoned radio circuits, including milk tins which were moulded into a transmitter.

Mr Sedanu-Kwawu said encouraged by then Education and Sports Minister, Mr Kwadwo Baah-Wiredu, who visited the school, the authorities appealed to UNESCO to help the school with an additional transmitter that could help educate, inform and entertain the student body and the entire Asankrangwa community.

He said in April last year, the UNESCO office delivered a 100-watt transmitter to the school.

Mr Sedanu-Kwawu expressed optimism that the FM station would seek to reposition the Wassa Amenfi traditional area with other districts through close collaboration with sister radio stations in the region, to provide educational programmes. Inaugurating the FM station, Mr Thomas Kodjoe, Coordinator for Agriculture, Science, Technology and Mathematics Education, explained that government's policy direction now was on a new vision for technical education and training by enhancing financial base and improved physical infrastructure. Mr Kodjoe urged the management of the station to use it to educate the people adding that it should be used to promote quality education on issues such as HIV/AIDS, sanitation, communicable diseases and indiscipline. Mr John Gyetuah, Member of Parliament for Wassa Amenfi West constituency expressed the hope that the station would demonstrate to all and sundry that both the print and electronic media were meant for fruitful discussions that could ginger up development by enhancing the knowledge of people about what to do in order to make life comfortable for all citizens in the country. 01 Nov 06
