BECE candidates in Hohoe trained in question answering

A total of 1,820 candidates for the impending Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) in the Hohoe Municipality have benefited from a "Hohoe Constituency Science Practical Lesson and Examination Summit".

The two-day programme was organised by the Municipal Directorate of Education and technically supported by Pedagogy Empire Limited (PEL), an NGO into education, examination and laboratory equipment delivery.

The training was funded by Mr John-Peter Amewu, Minister of Energy.

Mrs Agatha Dzothor, Secretary, PEL said her outfit was using technology to drive the country's inequality gap and offering support for deprived schools with time-tested teaching methods.

She said PEL relied on its mobile science laboratory to assist students to grasp all practicals needed for their examination in just six hours.

Mrs Dzothor said students and candidates continued to fail in filling the scannable answer sheets, which carried 40 per cent of marks for given objective subjects.

She said in areas that PEL had deployed their expertise; about 70 per cent success had been recorded from zero percent.

Mrs Gladys Emefah Amenyah, Hohoe Municipal Director, Ghana Education Service, commended Mr Amewu for the gesture, saying, "This will be a game-changer towards addressing the downward trend of examination results in the area.

She exhorted the candidates to take the exercise seriously and avoid pertinent mistakes during the real examination.

Togbe Dzidoah I, Head of Basic Education, Volta and Oti regions said the summit would demystify the "fear factor" in the candidates and equip them with technicalities and mechanics of writing examination. He said the exercise was designed according to how the West African Examination Council's system was set up.

Togbe Dzidoah said the percentage score of the Municipality was 43 per cent in 2016, 33 per cent in 2017 and 40 per cent in 2018, which must definitely be improved.



Mr Amewu said the support was out of his passion for the use of education, science and technology as tools to promote socioeconomic development from the local to national levels.

He said with determination, dedication to hard work and steadfastness, the future was bright for the candidates, reminding them that several years ago, he was like them.

Mr Amewu urged them to justify their inclusion for their parent's investments by excelling in the exams.

He said his target was for the Municipality to score 100 per cent and hinted of sustaining the training.

Mr Amewu promised to reward the best five students in the area and sponsor the best three to the Senior High School with the overall best student travelling to South Africa.

Master Adusu Gaglazu and Miss Rose Ahiatse from Divine Star International and Holy Rosary, respectively, beneficiaries of the summit said their confidence levels had been bolstered and ready to faceoff with the examination and thanked the stakeholders.

Branded mathematical sets were distributed to the candidates.
