Space FM,Sunyani - The Vice Chancellor of the Catholic University College of Ghana (CUCG), Professor James Hawkins Ephraim, has given the assurance that the school is negotiating with the Brong-Ahafo Regional Police Command to improve the fragile security situation facing the school and its outskirt hostels.

This was in response to a robbery incident that occurred in one of the girls’ hostels. He said that proactive measures have been put in place to prevent the occurrence of such an unfortunate incident in the future. The VC made this pronouncement during an emergency meeting held on 12th October 2007.

He charged on the security personnel employed by the school to intensify their surveillance activities, adding that "the authorities’ quest to make the CUCG students hotels free from hardened criminals is really on track". The students were further urged to report any suspicious character to either the school’s authorities or the police.

“We will do everything possible to protect students of this premier university in the Brong- Ahafo region. Residents within the regional capital must rally solidly behind CUCG in her effort to make robbery distasteful at her outskirt hostels”, he said.

Professor Ephraim expressed optimism that the University’s decision to collaborate with the regional police command will go a long way to improve security situation on both campus and at the various hostels.

“ It is very unfortunate that some of you are traumatized, it is not our making but we assure you that this will never happen again as far as your staying in this school is concern”, he added.

The students were advised to be conversant with security jargons and make good use of them when necessary. The Vice Chancellor noted that in order for the crusade to yield the expected dividend, students should start walking in pairs at night.

Professor Ephraim was of the view that the school’s security men are under performing. This has contributed immensely towards the criminal and other minor theft cases at some selected hostels. “The performance of the security personnel is far below expectation. We will not accept mediocrity”, he said adding that plans are far advanced to engage the services of another security agency for the school.

He asked the Students Representative Council (SRC) to seek the services of security experts to educate students on security tit bits.
