The chiefs and people of Chereponi in the Northern Region have described as a deliberate attempt by some self-seeking individuals to disturb the peace and stability in the area by advocating for Chereponi to be made part of the proposed North-Eastern Region.

The attempt to make Chereponi part of the proposed region, according to the chiefs and people of the area, would be a recipe for chaos, instability and insecurity.

The chiefs say that they are much delighted with President Akufo-Addo’s decision of creating new regions from the Northern Region, but have unequivocally stated that they are strongly against the inclusion of Chereponi.

According to the regent of Chereponi, Jaminja Malba Yombu, the authority of Chereponi emanates from Yani (Dagbon) as such, if they must be joined to any region, they will want to be part of the proposed Eastern Corridor Region so as to pay allegiance to Dagbon.

He argued that Walewale and Nalerigu – both proposed capitals of the North Eastern Region – are very far away from Chereponi.

The regent emphasized that the decision of Chereponi to remain under Dagbon should not be misconstrued to be an attempt to break the cultural ties that had long existed between the Anufors and the Mamprusis.

Jaminja Malba Yombu has revealed that a cross-section of chiefs who allegedly represented him at the commission of enquiry hearing did so without his authorization.

“Any submissions and suggestions made by them do not and cannot be a true reflection of the desires of the people of Chereponi and must be discarded,” he maintained.
