The National Chief Imam, Sheikh Osman Nuhu Sharubutu, has commended President John Dramani Mahama for instituting a National Day of Prayer and Thanksgiving and establishing an Office for Interfaith and Ecumenical Relations, describing these initiatives as clear evidence of the President’s deep commitment to fostering peace, unity and religious harmony in Ghana.
The Chief Imam emphasised that by creating an office dedicated to promoting peace, unity and religious tolerance, President Mahama has demonstrated a profound understanding of the vital role that faith and religion play in national development.
Speaking during a courtesy visit by the Presidential Envoy on Interfaith and Ecumenical Relations, Elvis Afriyie Ankrah and members of the National Day of Prayer and Thanksgiving committee, on Thursday, November 20, 2025, the Chief Imam offered special prayers for the President and his appointees, beseeching Almighty God to grant them success in their efforts to advance the nation’s progress.
He described Ghana as a uniquely blessed nation, asserting that its rich religious and ethnic diversity is a divine design intended to strengthen mutual support, understanding and unity among its people.
For his part, Elvis Afriyie Ankrah hailed the National Chief Imam as a priceless gift and a stabilizing force in Ghana, whose immense contributions to the country’s peace and stability cannot be overstated.
Explaining the purpose of his visit, the Presidential Envoy said he had come to pay homage to the revered cleric and to express profound gratitude for the pivotal role the Chief Imam played in the resounding success of the National Day of Prayer and Thanksgiving.
He assured the Chief Imam that the government and the people of Ghana will continue to celebrate and honour him for his exemplary leadership and enduring contributions to the nation’s socio-economic and moral development.
Afriyie Ankrah noted that President Mahama fully recognizes Ghana’s unique socio-political dynamics and remains committed to supporting and honouring individuals whose actions have helped preserve the country’s unity and ensured that peace prevails at all times.
He stressed that peace and stability are the bedrock of any nation’s economic prosperity, adding that President Mahama has tasked him with ensuring lasting harmony among all Ghanaians.
The Presidential Envoy further observed that Ghanaians are already witnessing tangible signs of progress under the Mahama administration and urged citizens to rally behind the government’s bold efforts to reset and rebuild the nation.
As part of the visit, Elvis Afriyie Ankrah and members of the National Day of Prayer and Thanksgiving Committee presented 100 bags of rice, several gallons of cooking oil and an undisclosed amount of cash to the Office of the National Chief Imam to support its charitable and religious activities.
