Mampong, (Ash), May 26, GNA - Managers and Caretakers of the various orphanages in the country have been advised to offer quality care for the children in their care to ensure their proper growth and development, Madam Mabel Asafo-Agyei, Superintendent of Mampong Babies Home, has said. She noted that when these children are given the proper up-bringing, they could become prominent in society and also contribute to the growth of the economy.
In an interview with Ghana News Agency, at the weekend, at Mampong in the Sekyere West District, Madam Asafo-Agyei indicated that Mampong Babies Home took up the challenge of offering quality care to abandoned and orphaned babies in 1967 and some of these children have grown to assume responsible positions in the country. The Mampong Babies Home, she narrated was established by the Anglican Missionary Sisters of the Order of the Holy Paraclete (OHP) from Whitby in England. The institution, she added, is part of the Saint Monica's Complex and cluster of schools, the Midwifery Training School and the Maternity Hospital.
The home nurtures these children from the vulnerable first years, adding that they are later reunited with their families, many of whom are migrant labourers and very poor. Mrs. Asafo-Adjei noted that the home began in a bungalow with a hand full of babies, but now accommodates more than fifty babies. It has various departments such as Administration, Kitchen, laundry, Poultry, Cr=E8che, Nursery and Crop farming. The home is now managed by the Anglican Diocese of Kumasi, after the OHP Sisters retired in 1982.
"The Home currently is facing challenges such as transportation, and infrastructural expansion of the children's dormitory," she said. She, however, expressed gratitude to organisations such as the Catholic Relief Service, World Vision, Guilds in Kumasi and Serwaah Ampem Foundation for being of great help to the home.
