Saltpond (C/R), Jan 4, GNA - A nine-member committee has been inaugurated at Saltpond to plan the 50th Anniversary of Ghana's independence in the Mfantseman District.

The committee under the chairmanship of the District Chief Executive (DCE) is to identify problems, which could affect the celebration for redress.

Inaugurating the committee at Saltpond, Mr. Robert Quainoo-Arthur, DCE stated that the history of Ghana's independence would not be complete without the mentioning of the roles of some personalities from the district.

The DCE especially mentioned Nana Amonoo V of Anomabo, who signed the Bond of 1844, the basis for the independence struggle.

The DCE said both the United Gold Coast Convention and the Convention People's Party that led the country to independence were formed at Saltpond but later inaugurated at Arena in Accra. He also recounted the roles of people like Dr. Kwegyir Aggrey, a scholar and George Ekem Fergusson, a girl-child education advocate, Surveyor and an abolitionist of the Slave Trade played in Ghana's history.

Mr. Quainoo-Arthur observed that the District would attract many tourists and visitors during the celebration and charged the members to work hard.

Mr. Yaw Adu Asamoah, District Co-ordinating Director, appealed to the people especially those along the coastline to ensure proper sanitation.

Katamanto Amonoo XI Omanhene of the Anomabo Traditional Area urged the youth to emulate the prominent citizens of the area and to contribute meaningfully towards development of the District.
