About 300 youth from Okantah, near Nsawam, in the Eastern Region, led by the chief of the community, Nana Kwabena Owusu on Friday demonstrated against two estate developers for allegedly destroying their farmlands.

The demonstrators, who wore red shirts, head and arm bands, told the Ghana News Agency that the estate developers, Quans and Suprime Jenises, had destroyed portion of their 500-acre farm at Okantah.

Nana Kwabena Owusu said if the companies are allowed to use the land for their intended purpose, the people would be deprived of their livelihood.

The Chief stressed that the situation could lead to hunger and poverty in the area and appealed to Okyehene, Osagyefo Amoatia Ofori Panin, to intervene for sanity to prevail in the area.

Nana Kwabena Owusu said: “the land belongs to our ancestors and it is stool land, which the inhabitants have used for a long time. We will not allow the land to be used for estate development while we go hungry since there is no other place for us to farm”.

He said on Thursday Quans and Suprime Jenises started clearing the 500-acre land for their projects, destroying crops, which resulted in a confrontation between the people and some land guards hired by the companies.
