Taxi drivers protest AMA directive

Some taxi drivers in Accra on Tuesday demonstrated against a directive from the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) asking them to join driver unions.

The directive abolishes wandering taxicabs on Accra's streets.

But the demonstrating drivers, numbering over 100, expressed their unhappiness with the directive, saying it is going to affect Ghanaian workers, especially at a time when standard of living has gone high.

“Look, there are some roads trotros do not ply. How will the worker get to work from an area with such roads?” asked one of the taxi drivers.

“If there is an emergency medical situation, it is a taxicab that may be readily available to take patients to a near-by hospital.”

They asked government to intervene stressing the directive is not enforceable.
