Tamale, Feb. 14, GNA - The government has reiterated its determination to tar the 151-kilometre Fufulso/Sawla Road in the Northern Region to open up the area for economic activities. Feasibility studies on the road had been undertaken by consultants to review the contract after which the project would be awarded on contract for work to start.

Mr. Godfred Bayon Tangu, Minister of State for Transportation who was on an inspection tour of some roads to find out their condition after the floods, said this at an annual council meeting of the Chiefs and people of Gonja Traditional Area at Mankpang in Central Gonja District on Wednesday.

Mr Tangu said the road would be tarred before President John Agyekum Kufuor leaves office next year, adding that the government would tar 15 kilometres of roads in each district of the country this year. He mentioned the Yendi/Bimbilla and Tamale/Salaga roads in the Northern Region, the Nadowli/Nandom/Hamile and the Wa/Tumu/Navrongo roads in the Upper West Region as some of the other roads earmarked for construction.

The Minister also inspected the 2.1-kilometre road linking Tishigu and Sakasaka in the Tamale Metropolis, which is being constructed at a cost of over 6.9 billion cedis. It is expected to provide quick and easy access to the central business area of the Tamale Metropolis. Mr. Tangu urged the contractor to ensure quality work and appealed to the residents of the area to cooperate with the contractor to enable him to complete the work on schedule. Mr. Mohammed Momeen, a resident of Tishigu, appealed to the Minister to ensure that road signs were placed at vantage points on the road to check reckless driving and prevent accidents.
