An ancient Egyptian funeral

The Book of the Dead is the modern name for a collection of spells that the ancient Egyptians called ‘The spells for going out by day’. These spells were usually written in hieroglyphs on rolls of papyrus and placed in or near the coffin of the deceased. Some of the spells were to be recited by priests during a person’s mummification and funeral.

The rest were a dead person’s guide to surviving in the afterlife. Only the wealthy could afford beautiful illustrated scrolls like this Book of the Dead, made for a high-ranking scribe called Ani, who lived in Thebes (modern Luxor) about 1275 BC. This section of Ani’s Book of the Dead shows his funeral.

Funerals took place once mummification of the body was complete, which could take up to 70 days. If the tomb was not ready, the funeral might have to wait even longer. After the mummy was wrapped, it was placed inside one or more coffins and taken back to the dead person’s home, so the funeral procession could start from there. The procession often had to cross the Nile by boat to a cemetery on the west bank. The coffin was then dragged to the tomb on a sledge drawn by oxen.

The funeral procession

The family walked behind the coffin. Men who were in mourning did not shave and women tore their clothing and put dirt on their heads as a sign of grief.

Sometimes professional female mourners were employed to weep and wail. Paintings show them with their eye makeup running down their faces with the tears. Behind the mourners came servants carrying the things that were to be buried with the dead person.

Several kinds of priest took part in the funeral. The most important was the lector-priest, who read the prayers and spells from a scroll. When the procession arrived at the tomb, the coffin was placed upright, supported by a priest dressed as Anubis, the jackal-headed god of cemeteries and embalming.

The dead person was addressed as the god Osiris, the first king of Egypt, who was murdered by his brother Seth and became ruler of the Underworld. Two women, usually female relatives, played the roles of Isis and Nephthys kneeling beside the coffin singing funeral songs for the dead person, just as the twin goddesses had sung laments for their dead brother Osiris.

Funeral rites

A series of rituals was then performed by the priests and by the sons of the dead person. The most important of these were the Opening of the Mouth ritual and the offering ritual. The Opening of the Mouth ritual was supposed to restore the mummy’s senses, so that it could breathe, see and hear again. During this rite, spells were read and the mummy’s mouth, nose and eyes were touched with ritual implements to ‘open’ them.

In the offering ritual, a priest recited spells to make sure that the spirit of the dead person would have everything that it needed to survive in the afterlife. As part of this rite, a table of food was offered to the deceased, and a calf was killed and its leg and still-beating heart offered to the dead person to restore their vitality. Once these ceremonies were over, the coffin was placed in the burial chamber and the family held a feast in or near the tomb.

Afterwards, the pots they had used during the meal were smashed, and the broken pieces, along with anything else left over from the funeral feast, were buried near the tomb.

The Egyptians did not regard the funeral as a final goodbye. People made regular visits to their family tombs, where parties were held to bring the living and the dead together, and statues of the gods were sometimes carried through the cemeteries to allow the dead to participate in religious festivals.

The living believed that their dead loved ones would be able to use the spells in the Book of the Dead to transform themselves into birds in order to visit their families. It was not unusual for families to keep busts of dead relatives in the house to encourage their spirits to visit, and people often left letters to the dead in tombs”

You don’t understand, I believe Danso Abeam is like many of us, though I don’t know much about his mother’s background but I believe his father was chief in a small Nkoranza town. The Nkoranza people are directly Ashantis from Amakom Kumasi. The Amakom Chieftain is sibling to the Nkoranza own. The Amakom Palace in the Amakom roundabout is also referred to as the Palace of the Nkoranza Hene. So Danso knows something myself and you don’t know. It could also be that, just like many of us, his mother is an Ashanti and possibly from the Ashanti Royal dynasty. As for me I support his efforts 1000%. We need peace not divisions. Some of us whose parents are from the two brotherly ethnic community don’t want to see any feud between Ashantis and Bono. It’s not worth it.

Many citizens of Nkoranza have been deceived for a very long time making them think they all migrated from Amakom, Kumasi.
This narrative is the BIGGEST DISTORTION OF HISTORICAL FACTS as far as the human race is concerned.

To set the historical records straight, only a few people migrated from Amakom (around 1715 to 1720) to meet the indigenous BONO people at Nkoranza.

The Indigenous BONO people had already established many towns and communities such as:
Nyafoman (now Akumsa Domasi)
Diwoman (now Seseman)
Asekye
Krukese
Bonomanso
Yefiri
Penehin
Kranka
Baafi
Boaben
Kokuma
Boama, etc.
Only those who have limited knowledge of historical facts will accept this ungrounded and falsehood narration.

To further cement my position, BONO people celebrate the following festivals, MUNUFIE festival, KWAFIE festival, NKYEFIE festival, FOFIE festival, APO) Festival, the MONOBENA festival, etc.

These are ancient BONO god's festivals. No chief in the Nkoranza traditional area celebrates AKwasidee, typical of the Asantes.

Because the Amakom migrants were the minority, they were forced naturally to abandon Akwasidee and even their language to adapt to the festivals and the language of the BONOs who are the MAJORITY in the Nkoranza Traditional Area.

The state of Nkoransa occupies approximately the middle of the Brong Ahafo Region with its traditional capital at Nkoransa town. Nkoransa is derived from Nkora, a shortened Akan word Nkokora, which means "Old men" whilst Nsa stands for mmiensa (three). Thus, Nkoransa means "Three Old Men." Nkoransa tradition states that the founders of the state came from Amakom near Kumase as well as from Dwenase in Adanse with Baffo Pim as leader. The Amakom group, which brought the people together to form a strong Nkronza state, claim that their migration took them first to the Ofinso district from where they later moved to Nkoransa.

There is a little controversy here: H.J. Hobbs gives a contrary account. According to him when the Amakom people came The Mo (Degha) people who were living at Longero-Nkwanta, feared an attack by Adu Donyina who was leading the immigrants from Amakom. They met him and submitted to him peacefully. The two sides then "drank fetish" to proclaim the peace. Adu Donyina then, ordered the Mo to remain at Longero-Nkwanta. However, late Professor Kwabena Adu Boahen, contended that Hobbs' account conflicts with the traditions of Nkoransa and Takyiman which agree on the fact that it was Baffo Pim rather than Adu Donyina who led the Amakom immigrants, founders of the Nkoransa state. Adu Donyina is mentioned as the man who led the migration from Amakom but he died on the way and, therefore, did not reach the Nkoransa area.

But it should be noted that not all the peoples who inhabit the area today originate from the place: some claim to be aboriginals, others are descendants of immigrants. Some of its inhabitants were established in the area long before the state came into being while others moved in some time after its creation. Archaeological evidence suggests that the ancestors of the Bono of Manso and Takyiman had organised a state in the area by the middle of the fourteenth century. These early inhabitants belonged to lineages of autochtonous and immigrant origin. The Bono of Manso and Takyiman claim to have emerged from a home at Amuowi, a few kilometres from Pinihi, in the Nkoransa state.

The people of Anyiman in the Nkoransa state also claim to have emerged from a cave called "Worobo" near their present settlement. The immigrant lineages, on the other hand, claim to have come in as refugees, as hunters or as warriors. Other immigrants whose migration preceded the founding of Nkoransa such as the Droman were of southern Akan origin. The people of Droman who lived a few kilometres north-east of Nkoransa migrated into the Bono area some time before Nkoransa's founders arrived in the area. According to Nkoransa tradition the Droman migrated from Nsuta in Ashanti. This claim is confirmed by Nsuta tradition.
According to the Nkoransa, the first people they came across were the Nyafoman. These were said to have been Bono people who had created a state which the migrants had to conquer in order to have a place to live. The Nkoransa claim that they defeated the Nyafoman with the help of Ofinso. For the assistance they gave the immigrants, Ofinso came to possess most of the lands of Nyafoman. For instance. Amuowi which is now part of Ofinso, was a town which served Nyafoman. The old capital of Nyafoman was situated near Abofour now in the Ofinso district. The remaining territory of Nyafoman was incorporated into what was to become the state of Nkoransa. Some descendants of old Nyafoman now live at Akumsa Dumase, a small village about five kilometres from Nkoransa, on the Nkoransa-Takyiman road. The chief of the village is still known as the Nyafomanhene (chief of Nyafoman).

The next group of people the migrants met in the area were the Degha, widely known as Mo (Degha). The Degha are a Gur speaking people related to the Grushi or Sisala. The Degha (Mo) now live on both sides of the Black Volta river in the area between the north-eastern and north-western trunk roads that lead to Tamale and Wa respectively. Their main settlement is New-Longero, located on the outer bank of the southern loop of the river. It is said that the Nkoransa took away the stool of the Degha and gave it to the son of the Nkoransahene who became the Ankobeahene. The Degha were then made to serve Nkoransa through the Ankobea division. The Ankobea stool of Nkoransa is, thus, referred to as the Donkro Akonnwa (Donkro Stool).

The Amakom migrants brought all these various groups of people together and acquired a population of considerable size with which they began to build a viable state. According to local tradition, the Amakom arrivals met some three old men when they finally reached the site of present day Nkoransa. These old men were Sene Diamin, Ampofu and Dasi. They had only one sister called Duoduwaa Amane. To these old men, the new arrivals expressed their desire to settle in the area. It is from these old men that Nkoransa eventually derived its name. Nkora in Akan is shortened from Nkokora "Old men" whilst Nsa stands for mmiensa (three). Nkoransa therefore means "Three Old Men".

There is controversy over the origin of these three old men. Some accounts in the tradition of Nkoransa claim that the three old men were immigrants who moved into the Nkoransa area from Dwenase in Adanse. According to these accounts, the old men belonged to the Asene matriclan of which Baffo Pim, the founder of Nkoransa, was a member. The story further says that these old men also stayed for some time at Amakom from where the migration of the founders of Nkoransa was initiated. This version of the origin of the three old men appears to be exclusive to a particular family in Nkoransa called the Asooko family. Asooko means ' bloody hoe'. The tradition of this family says that the leader of their migration, Biyaa Akrasi, killed a child with a hoe and thus earned this epithet. The Asooko claim to be the true descendants of the three old men. They say it was the presence of their ancestors in the Nkoransa area that induced their clansmen to migrate into the area.

The claim of the immigrant origin of the three old men contradicts the traditions of adjacent states in the area. The traditions of Takyiman, Nkoransa and Wenchi agree that the three old men were of indigenous origin. According to the Nkoransahen they first met the old men they (the old men) told their leader, Baffo Pim, that they were the sons of the Takyimanhene. Takyiman and Wenchi traditions also state simply that the old men were the Takyimanhene's hunters. According to the Wenchi account, Baffo Pim met some three old men when he arrived in the area where the Nkoransa is situated today. When he asked them where they came from, they told him: “We are three old hunters of Ohin Ameyaw, owner of the town Tekiman." Degha tradition also mentions the encounter of the Asante immigrants with the three old men but fails to give any clue as to the origin of the old men.

Thus Kwabena Adu- Boahene argued: “The unanimity of the local traditions of all the states in the area on the indigenous origin of the three old men gives that claim considerable authenticity. As hunters specially stationed by the king of Bono, it is reasonable to assume that they would also be Bono and possibly come from a particular lineage in Takyiman. The fact that the supposed descendants of the three old men do not enjoy any prominent position in Nkoransa suggests that their ancestors were not immigrants who had any clan relations with the founders of the state. Had the three old men or their said descendants been co-clansmen they would have been given positions in the new state created by their guests."

Nkoransa is derived from Nkora, a shortened Akan word Nkokora, which means "Old men" whilst Nsa stands for mmiensa (three). Thus, Nkoransa means "Three Old Men." Nkoransa tradition states that the founders of the state came from Amakom near Kumase as well as from Dwenase in Adanse with Baffo Pim as leader. The Amakom group, which brought the people together to form a strong Nkronza state, claim that their migration took them first to the Ofinso district from where they later moved to Nkoransa.

There is a little controversy here: H.J. Hobbs gives a contrary account. According to him when the Amakom people came The Mo (Degha) people who were living at Longero-Nkwanta, feared an attack by Adu Donyina who was leading the immigrants from Amakom. They met him and submitted to him peacefully. The two sides then "drank fetish" to proclaim the peace. Adu Donyina then, ordered the Mo to remain at Longero-Nkwanta. However, late Professor Kwabena Adu Boahen, contended that Hobbs' account conflicts with the traditions of Nkoransa and Takyiman which agree on the fact that it was Baffo Pim rather than Adu Donyina who led the Amakom immigrants, founders of the Nkoransa state. Adu Donyina is mentioned as the man who led the migration from Amakom but he died on the way and, therefore, did not reach the Nkoransa area.

But it should be noted that not all the peoples who inhabit the area today originate from the place: some claim to be aboriginals, others are descendants of immigrants. Some of its inhabitants were established in the area long before the state came into being while others moved in some time after its creation. Archaeological evidence suggests that the ancestors of the Bono of Manso and Takyiman had organised a state in the area by the middle of the fourteenth century. These early inhabitants belonged to lineages of autochtonous and immigrant origin. The Bono of Manso and Takyiman claim to have emerged from a home at Amuowi, a few kilometres from Pinihi, in the Nkoransa state.

The people of Anyiman in the Nkoransa state also claim to have emerged from a cave called "Worobo" near their present settlement. The immigrant lineages, on the other hand, claim to have come in as refugees, as hunters or as warriors. Other immigrants whose migration preceded the founding of Nkoransa such as the Droman were of southern Akan origin. The people of Droman who lived a few kilometres north-east of Nkoransa migrated into the Bono area some time before Nkoransa's founders arrived in the area. According to Nkoransa tradition the Droman migrated from Nsuta in Ashanti. This claim is confirmed by Nsuta tradition.
According to the Nkoransa, the first people they came across were the Nyafoman. These were said to have been Bono people who had created a state which the migrants had to conquer in order to have a place to live. The Nkoransa claim that they defeated the Nyafoman with the help of Ofinso. For the assistance they gave the immigrants, Ofinso came to possess most of the lands of Nyafoman. For instance. Amuowi which is now part of Ofinso, was a town which served Nyafoman. The old capital of Nyafoman was situated near Abofour now in the Ofinso district. The remaining territory of Nyafoman was incorporated into what was to become the state of Nkoransa. Some descendants of old Nyafoman now live at Akumsa Dumase, a small village about five kilometres from Nkoransa, on the Nkoransa-Takyiman road. The chief of the village is still known as the Nyafomanhene (chief of Nyafoman).

The next group of people the migrants met in the area were the Degha, widely known as Mo (Degha). The Degha are a Gur speaking people related to the Grushi or Sisala. The Degha (Mo) now live on both sides of the Black Volta river in the area between the north-eastern and north-western trunk roads that lead to Tamale and Wa respectively. Their main settlement is New-Longero, located on the outer bank of the southern loop of the river. It is said that the Nkoransa took away the stool of the Degha and gave it to the son of the Nkoransahene who became the Ankobeahene. The Degha were then made to serve Nkoransa through the Ankobea division. The Ankobea stool of Nkoransa is, thus, referred to as the Donkro Akonnwa (Donkro Stool).

The Amakom migrants brought all these various groups of people together and acquired a population of considerable size with which they began to build a viable state. According to local tradition, the Amakom arrivals met some three old men when they finally reached the site of present day Nkoransa. These old men were Sene Diamin, Ampofu and Dasi. They had only one sister called Duoduwaa Amane. To these old men, the new arrivals expressed their desire to settle in the area. It is from these old men that Nkoransa eventually derived its name. Nkora in Akan is shortened from Nkokora "Old men" whilst Nsa stands for mmiensa (three). Nkoransa therefore means "Three Old Men".

There is controversy over the origin of these three old men. Some accounts in the tradition of Nkoransa claim that the three old men were immigrants who moved into the Nkoransa area from Dwenase in Adanse. According to these accounts, the old men belonged to the Asene matriclan of which Baffo Pim, the founder of Nkoransa, was a member. The story further says that these old men also stayed for some time at Amakom from where the migration of the founders of Nkoransa was initiated. This version of the origin of the three old men appears to be exclusive to a particular family in Nkoransa called the Asooko family. Asooko means ' bloody hoe'. The tradition of this family says that the leader of their migration, Biyaa Akrasi, killed a child with a hoe and thus earned this epithet. The Asooko claim to be the true descendants of the three old men. They say it was the presence of their ancestors in the Nkoransa area that induced their clansmen to migrate into the area.

The claim of the immigrant origin of the three old men contradicts the traditions of adjacent states in the area. The traditions of Takyiman, Nkoransa and Wenchi agree that the three old men were of indigenous origin. According to the Nkoransahen they first met the old men they (the old men) told their leader, Baffo Pim, that they were the sons of the Takyimanhene. Takyiman and Wenchi traditions also state simply that the old men were the Takyimanhene's hunters. According to the Wenchi account, Baffo Pim met some three old men when he arrived in the area where the Nkoransa is situated today. When he asked them where they came from, they told him: “We are three old hunters of Ohin Ameyaw, owner of the town Tekiman." Degha tradition also mentions the encounter of the Asante immigrants with the three old men but fails to give any clue as to the origin of the old men.

Thus Kwabena Adu- Boahene argued: “The unanimity of the local traditions of all the states in the area on the indigenous origin of the three old men gives that claim considerable authenticity. As hunters specially stationed by the king of Bono, it is reasonable to assume that they would also be Bono and possibly come from a particular lineage in Takyiman. The fact that the supposed descendants of the three old men do not enjoy any prominent position in Nkoransa suggests that their ancestors were not immigrants who had any clan relations with the founders of the state. Had the three old men or their said descendants been co-clansmen they would have been given positions in the new state created by their guests."

There is a lot of animosity between the Asante and Bono people. I learned that at UCC when I schooled with Bono and Asante people. According to what I understand, the Bono people once ruled over the Asante people and lived around the SUBIN stream near The Kumasi Zoo area. The then Asantehene gave the daughter in marriage to the Bonohene so that they could live in peace. Unfortunately, the said Asantehene sent his AHAFO soldiers to attack the Bono people, defeated and killed many of them. This made the Bono people flee to their present place. Thus, there is no trust between the two groups. It is also generally known that the Asante people disrespect the Bono people and even make fun of the Bono dialect of the Akan language. This l know because I grew up in Asante area.
There are some Bono people who will never spend the night in Kumasi or any Asante town. They will prefer to take a vehicle back home and continue their journey the next day. Many Asante people and their chiefs, including the Asantehene knows what l am talking about. So, the Asantehene knows that the Bono and Asante people do not very much trust and like each other.
The Bono people also see the Asante people as very arrogant and disrespectful and don’t respect the Bono people. I learned this because I grew up in Asante and I remember that they used to make fun of the Bono ascent whenever they spoke. The Asante people sometimes called the Bono people BENKOTO BENSORE FO. But I think in this modern age, such nonsense and disrespect should stop. Asantehene can call for the education of his people for the two groups to live in harmony.

Many citizens of Nkoranza have been deceived for a very long time making them think they all migrated from Amakom, Kumasi.
This narrative is the BIGGEST DISTORTION OF HISTORICAL FACTS as far as the human race is concerned.

To set the historical records straight, only a few people migrated from Amakom (around 1715 to 1720) to meet the indigenous BONO people at Nkoranza.

The Indigenous BONO people had already established many towns and communities such as:

Bonomanso
Yefiri
Penehin
Kranka
Jema
Tanko
Busunya
Baafi
Bodom
Boaben
Kokuma
Boana, etc.
Only those who have limited knowledge of historical facts will accept this ungrounded and falsehood narration.

To further cement my position, BONO people celebrate the following festivals, MUNUFIE festival, KWAFIE festival, NKYEFIE festival, FOFIE festival, APO) Festival, the MONOBENA festival, etc.

These are ancient BONO god's festivals. No chief in the Nkoranza traditional area celebrates AKwasidee, typical of the Asantes.

Because the Amakom migrants were the minority, they were forced naturally to abandon Akwasidee and even their language to adapt to the festivals and the language of the BONOs who are the MAJORITY in the Nkoranza Traditional Area.
The foregoing analysis sufficiently demonstrates that, Nkoranza is made up of the BONOs who are the MAJORITY and a few Asante migrants from Amakom.
