Muntaka Mohammed-Mubarak is the Minister of Interior
Muntaka Mohammed-Mubarak, Minister for the Interior, called for collective action to enhance security in the Ashanti Region.
He was speaking at the Ashanti Regional Coordinating Council’s New Year Retreat with Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Chief Executives in Kumasi, on the theme ‘Retreat, Re-organize, and Redirect Towards The Reset Agenda.’
Muntaka stressed the critical role of Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Chief Executives (MMDCEs) in ensuring peace and security in the Region, highlighting violent crimes, particularly those involving firearms, and urged MMDCEs to champion the Gun Amnesty Programme and other security initiatives.
According to him, Ghana’s crime index stood at 45.35 percent in 2025, with a 253 percent increase in gun-related incidents. The Gun Amnesty Programme, launched on December 1, 2025, has been extended to January 30, 2026, in response to stakeholder appeals.
The programme aims to reduce the proliferation of small arms and light weapons, enhance conflict management, and bolster fire and rescue services.
He revealed that the Gun Amnesty Programme has seen positive responses, with civil society and traditional leaders supporting mop-up efforts. The Minister encouraged MMDCEs to champion the programme, organize town hall meetings, and partner with chiefs to encourage surrenders and report progress to the Ministry.
He urged MMDCEs to promote the Gun Amnesty Programme, support local security efforts, and collaborate with traditional leaders to address security challenges.
The Minister assured the public of the Ministry’s commitment to implementing policies that address security challenges and urged MMDCEs to work together to build a safer and more secure Ghana.
He also expressed the Ministry’s commitment to working with stakeholders to address security challenges and promote peace and security in the country.
