Felicia Adjei is the MP for Kintampo South Constituency
The Member of Parliament for Kintampo South Constituency, Felicia Adjei, has strongly condemned what she describes as unfair social media attacks targeting female Members of Parliament over their manner of speaking English.
Speaking in an interview with veteran broadcaster Blakk Rasta on Onua FM, the legislator expressed disappointment at the reaction of some Ghanaians online who have mocked and criticised Millicent Amankwa, the Member of Parliament for Sunyani West, following her recent public engagements.
According to Adjei, such criticism ignores the core responsibility of MPs, which is effective representation and service to their constituents rather than linguistic perfection.
She argued that many constituents across the country are more comfortable communicating in local languages, making excessive emphasis on polished English both misplaced and disconnected from grassroots realities.
“We represent people who are largely used to the local dialect. So what use is big grammar to my constituent who does not understand English?” she questioned.
The Kintampo South MP praised Millicent Amankwa for what she described as strong performance in Parliament and active constituency engagement, noting that she remains one of the youngest MPs in the current Parliament.
She stressed that performance, accessibility, and advocacy for constituents should be the true benchmarks for evaluating lawmakers.
Madam Adjei further warned that persistent ridicule of female politicians risks discouraging young women from participating in politics, at a time when Ghana continues to push for increased female representation in governance and leadership.
Her comments come amid growing national conversations about political communication, inclusivity, and whether fluency in English — Ghana’s official language — should overshadow effectiveness in public service delivery.
