A new public health initiative aimed at improving sanitation and hygiene in local markets has been launched in Koforidua, drawing participation from health professionals, traders, and community stakeholders.

The initiative, known as Market Health Watch, is spearheaded by Frimpong Emmanuel, a Medical Laboratory Professional at SDA Hospital, Koforidua, and a United Nations Public Health Advocate.

It seeks to address persistent health risks associated with poor sanitation and low hygiene awareness in Ghana’s bustling market environments.

Markets play a critical role in Ghana’s socio-economic life, serving as hubs for food distribution, commerce, and daily interaction. However, inadequate waste management, improper food handling, and limited access to hygiene education continue to expose both traders and consumers to preventable diseases.

Speaking at the launch, Emmanuel emphasized the importance of collective responsibility in improving market conditions. “A healthy market is a healthy community. This initiative is not just about awareness, it’s about empowering people to take action,” he said.

Community Outreach and Health Education

The outreach program, held across selected markets in Koforidua, featured a range of activities designed to promote public health. These included health education sessions on proper hygiene practices, demonstrations on safe food handling, basic health screenings for traders and customers, and public engagement on environmental cleanliness.

Health officials also interacted directly with traders, offering practical guidance on reducing contamination risks and maintaining cleaner trading spaces.

Multi-Stakeholder Collaboration

The program is being implemented in collaboration with the Ghana Health Service and key municipal health authorities, including the Municipal Health Director (New Juaben South), Municipal Disease Control Officer, Municipal Mental Health Specialist, Municipal Health Information Officer, and Municipal Nutrition Officer.

This coordinated approach ensures that the initiative aligns with broader public health strategies and receives technical support from experts in disease prevention and health promotion.

Media Support and Public Awareness

Media organizations have also partnered with the initiative to amplify its message. Among them are Joy Multimedia (Bryt FM, Koforidua) and Asaase Radio, Accra.

Through radio broadcasts and public announcements, the campaign aims to reach a wider audience and encourage behavioral change beyond the immediate market environment.

A Call for Sustained Action

Organizers stress that the success of Market Health Watch depends on sustained commitment from all stakeholders. Traders, consumers, and local authorities are being urged to maintain cleanliness, adopt safer practices, and support ongoing health education efforts.

Public health experts note that improving sanitation in markets can significantly reduce the spread of infectious diseases and enhance overall community well-being.

As the initiative gains momentum, stakeholders are optimistic that it will inspire similar interventions across other markets in Ghana.
