Violence has broken out in the Nawuhugu/Kolick electoral area of the Gushegu District, leaving five communities burnt following a dispute over the installation of a new chief in Yidaan.

The affected areas are Yidaan, Busum No. 2, Kukpok, Nagnan and Nayagil.

The conflict followed the death of the previous chief, Sakpi, which created a vacancy. Two factions have since disagreed over who has the authority to install a successor.

While the Binamob group maintains that the Zantali-Lana should perform the enskinment, the Bikpaangib group insists the role belongs to either the Chief of Nagnan or the Chief of Nasu.

Tensions intensified when the Binamob faction proceeded to install its nominee through the Zantali-Lana, a decision rejected by the opposing side.

The disagreement escalated into clashes that spread across multiple communities, leading to the destruction of homes and property, as well as the killing of livestock.

No deaths have been confirmed, but several people are reported to have been injured.

Residents have expressed fears of further escalation and are calling for urgent security intervention.

The Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Christian Tetteh Yohuno, has deployed additional personnel, including a special operations team with armoured vehicles, to the area.

Police say the team will collaborate with the Northern Regional Command to increase patrols and restore order.
