The Asantehene at the Asanteman Council meeting on Monday
The Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, has reportedly announced his plans to reconstitute the Asanteman Standing Committee, which is an executive organ of the Asanteman Council.
According to a report by opemsuo.com, the king of Asanteman, at the Asanteman Council meeting on April 20, 2026, expressed his displeasure about the ineffectiveness of the current standing committee.
He is reported to have said that the ineffectiveness of the committee is the main factor enabling misconduct across some paramountcies in the Asante Kingdom, including Sampa, Nkyeraa, Amantim, and parts of Asante Akyem.
He added that the reconstitution of the committee is needed to restore order and enforce traditional authority in his kingdom.
“The Committee is currently inactive, giving room for misbehaviour in some Asanteman jurisdictions in the Bono Region,” the king is quoted to have said.
He noted that because of the inactivity of the standing committee, court decisions on chieftaincy matters in the areas he mentioned are not being enforced.
“There is a court ruling in favour of Amantimhene, yet there is someone exerting his authority as chief, resisting the legitimate chief. The same is taking place in Nkyeraa, which has been adopted as a Divisional Council in the House of Chiefs,” he noted.
He added, “Despite court rulings, an Ivorian is in Sampa carrying himself off as a royal and chief. Sampahene Gyafla will not die. The town belongs to him, and he will assume his rightful authority.”
The Asantehene went on to direct traditional rulers within the Ashanti, Bono, Bono East, Ahafo, and Asante Akyem areas to convene and nominate two representatives each to form the committee.
