A group within the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the Ahafo Ano North Constituency, known as the Concerned Patriots, has appealed to Dr Mahamudu Bawumia to intervene in the constituency's deepening internal disputes to restore peace and prevent further erosion of the party's support base.
The group warned that the conduct of certain constituency executives, the Member of Parliament, and other individuals, which they claim contributed to the party's poor performance in the 2024 general elections, could severely undermine the NPP's chances in the 2028 elections if left unaddressed.
Speaking at a press conference, a leading member of the group, Nana Kwame Awuah, lamented that the party had been hijacked by self-serving politicians who prioritise their personal interests over the collective success of the NPP.
"Some of these MPs only do things that benefit themselves without considering the broader victory of the party. Dr Bawumia, we are begging you to wake up. These selfish MPs want to repeat the same damaging acts, and we are pleading with you to step in and return the party to the grassroots," he said.
The group's concerns stem from alleged irregularities during the polling station executive elections. The Concerned Patriots have secured a court injunction to halt all subsequent constituency-level elections until voting in 23 out of the constituency's 139 polling stations is conducted in accordance with party regulations.
An Electoral Area Communications Officer, Ayisi Asare Awuah, explained that seeking legal redress became their only option after internal party conflict-resolution mechanisms failed to address their concerns.
The aggrieved members are asking the court to declare the failure to conduct elections in the 23 polling stations unlawful. They are also seeking an order for the removal of the regional executive representative overseeing the process and a directive for fresh elections to be conducted transparently and in strict compliance with the party's rules.
According to the group, the alleged disregard for the party's guidelines has already led to the defection of several frustrated members to rival political parties.
They warned that these defections pose a direct threat to the NPP's hold on the constituency. In the 2024 parliamentary election, the incumbent NPP MP retained the seat by a narrow margin of just 120 votes over the National Democratic Congress (NDC) candidate, Kwasi Adusei.
The Concerned Patriots stressed that unless Dr Bawumia intervenes to ensure justice, transparency, and fair play, the NPP risks losing its grip on the Ahafo Ano North Constituency in future elections.
