Tragedy deepens in Alajo as floodwaters turn deadly
The number of people who have died in the flooding at Alajo in Accra has risen to three, with the victims reportedly suffering electrocution after floodwaters entered their homes.
The first two victims were said to have been inside their rooms when rising water came into contact with electrical installations.
Their bodies were later recovered by officials from the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) and residents before being taken to the Maamobi Polyclinic.
A third fatality was later confirmed, while reports of a possible fourth victim remain unverified.
The heavy rains, which began on Sunday night and continued into Monday morning, flooded parts of Accra, submerging roads, homes and businesses.
As a precaution, GRIDCo and the ECG have shut down power supply from the Mallam and Achimota primary substations following flooding at the facilities.
Greater Accra Regional Minister Linda Obenewaa Akweley Ocloo has directed all MMDCEs to intensify rescue efforts, while NADMO has activated emergency response teams across affected areas. The Interior Ministry has also advised residents to avoid flooded roads and report emergencies.
