There is so much that we, the general public, can do to ameliorate the consequences of increasing waste in our system. Landfill is a long-term destroyer of our planet as emissions of methane into the atmosphere are one of the the principle causes of climate change which the whole world is experiencing today ultimately leading to farmers abandoning the land and heading for the city. In Lashibi, we are encouraging home-owners to segregate their waste into plastic, glass, metal, paper and electronic waste which they can dispose of at conveniently situated recycling drop-off points in the area. Organic waste can easily be converted into compost to enrich the soil. Our children need to understand the ever-present danger if we fail to tackle the matter with urgency as well as ways in which they can influence their peers as well as family elders into positive action.
