Why Asogli chiefs are organising overnight cleansing and purification rituals in Ho

Traditional cleansing and purification rituals will be performed in Ho from 10:00 p.m. on Friday, September 11, 2026, through to dawn on Saturday, September 12, as chiefs and elders seek to cleanse the township following a recent spate of road accidents.

The rituals are being organised by the chiefs and elders of Ho in response to accidents that have resulted in the loss of lives and property in the township.

The Asogli State Council, acting under the authority of Togbe Afede XIV, Agbogbomefia of Asogli, announced the exercise in a statement issued to clarify various messages circulating on social media regarding the rituals.

“The Council wishes to clarify that the rituals will commence at 10:00 p.m. on Friday, September 11, and continue through the night until dawn on Saturday, September 12, 2026,” the statement said.

The Council explained that the exercise is intended to seek spiritual protection and promote peace and the continued wellbeing of residents.

“For the avoidance of doubt, the rituals are traditional cleansing and purification rites being performed by the chiefs and elders of Ho in response to the recent unfortunate spate of road accidents in the township, which has resulted in the loss of lives and property,” it stated.

“The rituals are intended to cleanse the town and seek spiritual protection, peace and the continued wellbeing of its people,” the Council added.

The Asogli State Council has also dismissed reports suggesting that members of the public will be prevented from travelling to Ho or remaining in the township while the rituals are being performed.

“The Council further wishes to dispel any impression that members of the public are prohibited from travelling to Ho or being in the township during this period. There is no such restriction. The public may travel to and from Ho as usual,” it stated.

The Council, however, called on residents, visitors and members of the public to conduct themselves in a manner that respects the traditional exercise.

“The Council, however, respectfully calls on residents, visitors and all members of the public to conduct themselves in a manner that respects the solemnity and sanctity of the rituals,” the statement said.

It further appealed to churches and organisers of other activities to, as far as practicable, end their programmes by 9:30 p.m.

“All church programmes and other organised activities should, as far as practicable, end by 9:30 p.m. Operators of recreational centres, including pubs, drinking spots and similar establishments, are likewise expected to bring their activities to an end by 9:30 p.m. and avoid any conduct that may interfere with the performance of the rituals,” it stated.

The Council also clarified that the cleansing exercise is separate from the ongoing annual Asogli Te Za celebration.

“The Council wishes to emphasise that the rituals are not connected to the ongoing celebration of the annual Asogli Te Za and do not form part of the Te Za programme. Accordingly, all scheduled activities of the 2026 Asogli Te Za will proceed as advertised,” it said.

Route for the rituals

The traditional cleansing procession will begin at Ho-Hliha and proceed to Ola Top before continuing through Scrap Road via the Royal Hospital area.

It will then pass through Zongo, Ben Tota, Ho-Dome, Ho Kpodzi Junction, Ho-Ahoe Roundabout, Ho-Ahoe Public Toilet, Mawuli School Road and Ho-Heve.

The procession will subsequently pass by Mawuli School before proceeding to the Power House, which has been designated as the final destination.

The Asogli State Council has urged the public to disregard misinformation about the exercise and rely on official communications from the Asogli Traditional Council for accurate information.
