GSA seeks stronger youth development partnership with sector minister

The Ghana Scout Association (GSA) is deepening its collaboration with the Ministry of Youth Development and Empowerment to expand practical opportunities for young people in leadership, community service and responsible citizenship.

The commitment emerged when the leadership of the GSA held a high-level follow-up meeting with the Minister for Youth Development and Empowerment, George Opare Addo, building on the Association’s recent engagement with President John Dramani Mahama.

During the meeting, Opare Addo reaffirmed his personal commitment, as well as that of the Ministry, to supporting the GSA in advancing the issues and initiatives discussed during its engagement with the President.

The Minister acknowledged the important role of Scouting in youth development and expressed his readiness to work with the Association to strengthen opportunities for young people across the country.

The discussions focused on the need for stronger institutional collaboration and practical support for initiatives that can deliver tangible outcomes for young people, particularly in youth empowerment, leadership development, responsible citizenship and community service.

Turning Scouting into practical opportunities

The proposed collaboration is expected to give young people greater opportunities to develop leadership skills through practical participation in scouting activities and community initiatives.

Rather than limiting youth development to training and programmes, the partnership is expected to create platforms where young people can take responsibility, organise activities, work in teams and contribute to solving challenges in their communities.

Community service is also expected to be an important outcome, providing young people with opportunities to put their skills into practice while developing a stronger sense of civic responsibility.

The engagement is therefore expected to position young people not simply as beneficiaries of government and institutional programmes, but as active participants in community development and national affairs.

GSA commitment

The Chief Commissioner of the GSA, Hilary Y Awusi, expressed appreciation to Opare Addo for the warm reception and renewed commitment to supporting the Association.

He said the Association remained committed to working closely with government and other strategic partners to create meaningful opportunities for young people and position Scouting as a stronger contributor to national development.

The Chief Commissioner’s position places the emphasis on translating the renewed government support into practical programmes that can expand the role of young people in their communities and equip them with experience that can support their personal and professional development.

Building on Presidential engagement

The meeting with the sector Minister follows the GSA’s recent engagement with President Mahama and provides a direct institutional channel for advancing issues raised during that engagement.

With the Minister reaffirming the Ministry’s support, the focus now shifts towards stronger collaboration and practical support for initiatives that can give young people opportunities to lead, serve and participate meaningfully in national development.

The success of the engagement will ultimately be reflected in the opportunities created for young people across the country and the extent to which Scouting can contribute more visibly to Ghana’s youth development agenda.
