CETAG demands independent probe into death of Gbewa College lecturer

The Colleges of Education Teachers’ Association of Ghana (CETAG) has called for an immediate, independent and transparent investigation into the death of Abdulai Issaka, a Science Lecturer at Gbewa College of Education.

CETAG said Mr Issaka reportedly died following an encounter with military personnel on Friday, September 11, 2026.

According to the Association, information reaching it alleges that the lecturer was subjected to severe physical assault after he was found outside during curfew hours.

CETAG said the alleged assault directly resulted in his death, although it stressed that the circumstances must be established through an independent investigation.

CETAG demands full investigation

The Association condemned what it described as the reported use of excessive and lethal force against Mr Issaka.

It is demanding an investigation to establish what happened before, during and after the alleged incident.

The probe, CETAG said, must identify the military personnel involved, determine the precise cause of death and establish whether any unlawful conduct occurred.

It has called on the Government, Ghana Armed Forces, Ghana Police Service, Commission on Human Rights and Administrative Justice (CHRAJ) and other relevant state institutions to undertake the investigation.

CETAG said the process must be conducted “independently, without intimidation, interference, or protection of any individual on account of rank or position.”

Calls for prosecution if wrongdoing is established

CETAG said anyone found to have committed unlawful acts leading to Issaka’s death must face the law.

The Association is demanding that perpetrators be arrested, prosecuted and brought to justice in accordance with Ghanaian law.

It stressed that “No person irrespective of position, uniform, or authority should be above the law.”

CETAG has also called for the bereaved family to be given full disclosure about the circumstances of Mr Issaka’s death, as well as the necessary support and assistance.

CETAG appeals for calm

The Association has also appealed to the Acting Principal, management, staff and students of Gbewa College of Education to remain calm and exercise restraint while investigations are conducted.

CETAG acknowledged the anger, pain and frustration that may follow the death but urged the College community to allow the investigative and judicial processes to take their course.

The Association said it would continue engaging the relevant authorities to ensure that the circumstances surrounding Mr Issaka’s death are properly investigated.

‘We demand justice’

CETAG extended its condolences to Mr Issaka’s family, colleagues and friends, describing his death as a painful loss to the teaching profession and the Gbewa College of Education community.

The Association said its position is clear: “We condemn brutality. We condemn the unlawful use of force. We demand a credible investigation. We demand accountability. We demand justice for Mr. Abdulai Issaka.”

CETAG said it will closely monitor developments and engage relevant state institutions to ensure the circumstances surrounding Mr Issaka’s death are not ignored.
