Upper Manya MP steps up education drive with infrastructure, furniture and STEM support

Member of Parliament for Upper Manya Krobo in the Eastern Region, Bismarck Tetteh Nyarko, has stepped up efforts to improve education in the constituency, with a series of interventions targeting school infrastructure, furniture and practical learning.

The latest interventions, undertaken across four schools on Thursday, September 24, 2026, included the provision of desks, teachers' furniture, STEM learning materials and other educational items, as well as the commissioning of a two-unit classroom block and a school football field.

The beneficiary schools were Asesewa Methodist Basic School, Otrokper R/C Basic School, Mensah Dawa Presbyterian Basic School and Asesewa Senior High School.

At the basic school level, the interventions included mono and dual desks, teachers' tables and chairs, STEM equipment, dustbins and roofing sheets.

At the Asesewa Methodist Basic School, Nyarko commissioned a two-unit classroom block which he said was constructed after the community drew his attention to increasing enrolment and the need for additional classroom space.

He also commissioned a football field at the school.

MP targets practical learning

The lawmaker said his interventions were not limited to physical infrastructure, but also sought to provide pupils with the resources needed to improve the quality of learning.



He presented STEM equipment to three basic schools, saying the materials would help make science and related subjects more practical.

According to him, providing pupils with opportunities to handle learning materials would complement classroom teaching and help them understand scientific concepts better.

He said the development of education should remain central to the constituency's development agenda.

“If we want development for Upper Manya, we are not going to develop the roads leaving behind our children,” he said.

Nyarko said the interventions represented part of a broader effort to improve conditions in schools across Upper Manya Krobo.

He disclosed that other education projects were also nearing completion, including a primary school building in a community that had previously operated without an appropriate school facility.

The legislator said the project was about 98 per cent complete and was awaiting completion and handover by the contractor.

Focus shifts to Asesewa SHS

The MP's intervention also extended to Asesewa Senior High School, where he presented 250 mono desks, teachers' tables and chairs.

The donation follows earlier support for the school, including streetlights and learning materials.

Bismarck Tetteh Nyarko said he was now turning his attention to some of the school's outstanding infrastructure needs after receiving concerns from management.

He mentioned the administration block and dining hall as areas requiring attention and said he would pursue discussions with the relevant authorities.

He said the anticipated increase in student numbers made expansion of the school's facilities particularly important.

Nyarko also expressed his commitment to supporting efforts to raise Asesewa SHS to the standard of a Category A school.

However, he stressed that such an objective would require more than infrastructure.

According to him, government and other stakeholders must provide the necessary facilities, while teachers and students must contribute through effective teaching, discipline and hard work.

He therefore urged students to remain humble, obedient and respectful and to take their studies seriously.

'Education is foundation for development'

Nyarko said his interventions were informed by the belief that education was fundamental to the development of Upper Manya Krobo.

He said investment in schools should therefore be considered alongside other development priorities such as roads and other physical infrastructure.

The MP said the ultimate objective was to create an environment in which pupils and students could receive quality education and develop the skills required to contribute to the constituency's future development.

DCE backs constituency education agenda

District Chief Executive for Upper Manya Krobo, Emmanuel Kwesi Lawer, said the Assembly was also using its Common Fund allocations to address educational challenges in the district.

He said part of the 2025 Common Fund had been allocated to furniture, while other portions were supporting school infrastructure and other development sectors.

Lawer said the Assembly would continue to collaborate with the MP and other stakeholders to address the remaining gaps.



Education authorities welcome interventions

Upper Manya Krobo Education Director Evelyn Tawiah Nyanu welcomed the interventions, particularly the provision of furniture and STEM equipment.

She said inadequate furniture remained a challenge in some schools and expressed confidence that the latest intervention would improve teaching and learning conditions.

She said the STEM materials would also give pupils greater opportunities for practical learning.

Nyanu, however, appealed for further support to address infrastructure gaps in schools across the district.

She said some classroom blocks still required construction or rehabilitation and urged stakeholders to continue supporting the education sector.

The latest interventions have consequently expanded the focus of the constituency's education agenda from the provision of classroom infrastructure to furniture, STEM learning resources, sports facilities and the improvement of second-cycle education.
