Residents of Dodowraso in the Birim North District of the Eastern Region now have access to clean and safe drinking water following the commissioning of a new mechanized borehole by the Member of Parliament (MP) for Abirem, Charles Asuako Owiredu.
For years, residents relied on a single, non-mechanized borehole located far from the community. This forced women and children to walk long distances and cross a busy highway to fetch water, exposing them to potential road accidents.
Speaking at the commissioning ceremony, Mr Owiredu emphasized the importance of access to potable water, stating that no community should struggle to obtain such an essential resource.
“Water is life. No community should have to struggle to get clean water to drink,” he said.
He urged residents to take proper care of the facility to ensure it serves the community for many years.
“We must cultivate a culture of proper maintenance of community facilities to ensure their sustainability for years to come,” he added.
The Assembly Member for the Nkwanteng Electoral Area, Constance Agyei, recounted a tragic incident in which a child lost his life while crossing the road to fetch water.
“We once lost a child who was knocked down while crossing the road to fetch water,” she revealed.
Agyei expressed gratitude to the MP on behalf of the residents, noting that the new mechanized borehole, located in the heart of the community, would significantly reduce the risks associated with fetching water.
She added that the facility would ease the burden on women and children while improving access to clean water, sanitation and general hygiene in the community.
