It is about time we give some dignity to our old people to die peacefully.
Geriatrics to the best of my knowledge is not part of the curricular of our medical schools. Most of our doctors aspire to be gynecologists so that they could make money by performing several abortions. I lost both my parents to stroke. That's when I realized that care facilities for our senior citizens are non-existent. The nurses and doctors generally assume that anyone 50 or above is old and should be allowed to die. There is no visible care in our hospitals. It makes me doubt the competency of our Ghanaian doctors. The Hippocratic Oath and Nurses Creed both seem to be absent from the training and practice of our doctors and nurses. Pain management is unheard of, and physical therapy seems to be absent from the vocabulary and practice of doctors and nurses. Poor senior citizens are largely abused by our medical delivery system. Hospice services are non-existent or woefully insufficient.
