Hearing will resume today in the charge of defilement of a two and half-year-old child against one Kehinde Layode at a family court sitting in Ikeja Magistrate Court, Lagos.
According to Access to Justice, AJ, a non-governmental organisation, handling the matter, “on November 11, 2013, we received information that a girl (names withheld) (two and a half years old at the relevant time), was s*xually molested by a man, Kehinde Layode, who had been put in a position of trust over the child.
The family had said the girl was kept with the defendant and his wife by the mother who went to go and buy drugs for the toddler as she was running a fever.
“This was a fairly routine help that the girl’s mother often sought and the defendant and his wife offered. However, on this fateful day when the girl’s mother returned to the house, she knocked on the door but the defendant told her that she was sleeping.
“The mother, however, insisted that the door be opened so that she could administer the drug she had bought.
Subsequently, she took the toddler home but noticed that there was a thick white fluid coming down her laps at which point she raised an alarm.
“The alarm attracted neighbours, who insisted that she report the matter to the police and take her for medical examination, which she did. The case was reported to the Igando Police Station and the police have, after investigations, launched a prosecution against the defendant.
“The case is presently before Mrs A. Oshoniyi of the magistrate sitting at Family Court, Ikeja Magistrate Court, Lagos State.
“The charge against the defendant is that of defilement of the little child by having s*xual intercourse with her on January 12, 2013.”

10 Girls Raped In Ghana Daily

Hardly a day goes by without a report on a child defilement case in the media, and according to child rights groups working on the issue, at least 10 girls under the age 16 are defiled every day in the country.
They say that even though the cases reported in themselves are alarming, they constitute only about 10% of such abuses, as the overwhelming majority of the cases are hushed.
The penalty for defilement was increased in the 1998 amendment to the Criminal Code (ACT 29) to a minimum of seven and a maximum of 25 years without an option of a fine. Yet recent studies show that sexual abuse of children in Ghana is still alarming high.
Figures from the then Ministry for Women and Children Affairs (MOWAC) put the annual case of reported defilement cases at around 800 a year, but according to one of the groups working to stop the practice, Light For Children Ghana, this is only a small portion of an alarming national catastrophe.
For this year alone, Ghana News Agency bulletins have been recording an average of about three defilement case a day.
The majority of the defilement cases are hushed, according to child psychologists, because in some case the victims do not understand what has happened to them or are afraid of being shamed or accused of being bad girls.
Some guardians also prefer to keep such incidence to themselves.
This is especially the case where the abusers happen to be family members. There have also been cases of neighbors, teachers, pastors and all sorts of people abusing girls some as young as two years.
There are also instances where guardians go to the police, but later stop following the case and give up because they find the processes cumbersome, studies indicate.
Making the situation worse, according to Mrs Juliana Azumah, the last Minister for MOWAC, was that the over 50,000 children living and working on the country’s streets were often taken advantage of by sexual predators or run to commercial sex as way of making a living.
Also in certain parts of the country such as in parts of the Upper West Region, for instance, Action Aid Ghana, reports that an average of 50 young girls below the ages of 15 and 17 are abducted for marriage every year in the Jirapa, Lambussie/Karni and Sissala East districts.
Figures at the Domestic Violence and Victim Support Unit (DOVVSU) National Secretariat indicate that boys are also sometimes abused sexually, but the vast majority of the victims are girls.

The strange incident, which occurred in Lori Oke settlement, a village that is about 10 kilometres from Ogotun town, drew the attention of hundreds of residents and travellers.
The spokesman of the community, Sunday Ogunmeji, who spoke with NAN correspondent on behalf of the Baale (community head), Ganiyu Adetoun, said a pastor, Mr Daniel Odedele, helped to deliver the goat of the baby.
“After watching the goat labour for several hours, the pastor took pity on it and courageously pulled the baby out, only for it to turn out to be human-like. The `baby’ had all the features of a human being such as human face, head, hair, female private parts, two legs and two arms with hoofs.
“However, the human-like baby died at about noon as a result of lack of care as the crowd merely trooped there to watch rather than to attempt to save its life,’’ Ogunmeji said.
A resident, Mr Saidi Oladepo, who is a commercial motorcycle (Okada) operator, told NAN that immediately the goat delivered the `human-like baby’, it took to its heels.
He said that as soon as members of the community got wind of the incident, they ran helter-skelter in apparent confusion.
He said alarm was raised and the local security agents, referred to as `Peace Corps’, were alerted to the incident.
Oladepo added that it took more than two hours to re-capture the goat in the bush.
The traditional ruler of Ogotun-Ekiti, Oba Samuel Oyebode, could not be reached for comment as he was said to be in a meeting of the Traditional Council.

Eight year old girl has died after she was defiled by a 55 year old man in Enchi in the Western Region.
The suspect Enoch Asante defiled the girl on the 14th of September but she died on Friday, September 27th after complaining of pains in her abdomen.
Her body has since been deposited at the Enchi Government Hospital morgue.
The man is on remand at Enchi police station on provisional charge of defilement.
Chief Inspector Abban Koomson tells Joy News the suspect will be arraigned on October 9.
He also hinted of fresh charges to be levelled against Enoch Asante after the sudden death of the victim.

The maiden edition of the Igbo leadesrship retreat organised by the Ohaneze took off yesterday with elder statesman, Chief Anthony Enahoro, restating the call for a national conference.
Enahoro who was a special guest at the retreat held in Asaba, the Delta State capital, said the national conference was the only way of resolving the major problems that had affected the growth of the nation.
The meeting which had in attendance Senate President Adophus Wabara, Imo State Governor Achike Udenwa, his Ebonyi State counterpart, Dr Sam Egwu, Justice Chukwu-difu Oputa, the Asagba of Asaba, Obi Prof Chike Edozien, prominent businessman, Chief Sunny Odogwu and scores of Igbo intellectuals, was the beginning of a new move to reposition the Igbo in the country, and at the same time reconcile all people of Igbo descent, both at home and in the Diaspora.
Wabara, addressing the meeting, said the final outcome of the novel course would remain a reference material for now and future Igbo concerns.
"A forum of this nature and of this magnitude has long been desired, especially at this time when there appears to be an increase in the consciousness and agitations for the Igbo man to rise and assume his pride of place in the polity of the nation," he said.
While calling for a rebirth of Ndigbo to enable them remain relevant in the nation's dynamic political arena, the Senate President said it was time the Igbo changed the way other Nigerians perceived them.
"We cannot afford to be continually seen as a people that lack a common focus or a race without the benefit of ideological illumination, or even organisational proficiency," he stated.
Wabara called for "a grilled reappraisal of the core Igbo values."
He said: "Why must it be the Igbos that top the list of 419 suspects? Why must it be the Igbo that are most frequently arrested for drug peddling? Why must it be the Igbos that will champion the manufacture and sale of fake and adulterated drugs.? These are anathemas that must be summarily condemned in every ramification," he noted.
He called on Ndigbo to put their house in order and join hands to work for the common good, particularly on the political playing field.
Wabara said: "A situation where every Igbo man would inordinately aspire to occupy the only position zoned to the Igbos does not speak well of our unity of purpose, neither does it buttress our organisational strength."

None of the witchcraft baloney will hold up to scrutiny. To label anybody from a whole lot of mental illnesses such as schizophrenia or dementia as a witch or wizard is way too easy. That is what some of us say when we don't know or understand what we are dealing with, and in the interim subject such psychos to neglect or abuse instead of helping them. Recently, a lady told a friend that her daughter us graduating from one of those schools so, she is being invited to the graduation ceremony. What do you say about that? We must stop rubbishing such cases as "we" cannot prove them due to their spiritual nature. None of us, who visit this site can prove anything about witches or wizards but they are real.
This man may be telling the truth or not but there is some truth about what he is saying. Witches and wizards are real and they are destroying some families in Ghana.

Now that we have him "exposed" in broad daylight, we should assume he hasn't gotten back to put the breasts back to where he borrowed them from. Can we therefore go and fact check with the said granddaughter to see if her chest is missing some two puffy breasts?
What most people don't know is that some men develop breasts later on in life. Medical reports are full of such occurrences. It is called Gynecomastia. "Gynecomastia is triggered by a decrease in the amount of the hormone testosterone compared with estrogen. The prevalence of gynecomastia peaks between the ages of 50 and 80. Most people are so engrossed in this belief to the extend that innocent people are constantly accused of being witches or wizards. In Ghana, women, especially the elderly ones are always accused of being witches. It is not surprising because women have their own peculiar problems once they reach their menopause.
Is it not a shame that we are always accusing our elderly of being witches and wizards? We must remember that the Stone Age era is gone forever. So long as we continue to think as if we are still in that age, we shall perpetually remain a backward nation with a backward people.
If there is a witchcraft school in Manhattan does it mean witches and wizards exist? Does teaching and learning go on in the spiritual or in the physical realm? Come on! we are in the 21st century and as such we must desist from thinking like primitive people.
The man there appeared to be someone with a psychological problem. There are people who behave abnormally or like children in their old age. The scientists can easily explain why some men develop breast.

First of all, I didn't insult any northerners. The story is about witches and wizards, and I made a most relevant reference to the phenomenon in the N/R and what is going on there. I don't think I know of same in U/W and U/E, also part of the 3 northern regions.
I've relations from the 32 Gonja wives of my great grandfather in the North. I even share genes with Ibrahim, Pres. Mahama's brother, thanks to the same great grandfather. And I spent my early years at Damongo, and we were there when President Mahama was born.

The truth about this case will never be known but that is how bizarre the world is. Yes, it can be true that he is suffering from dementia or Alzheimer but if he did walk from his home in the Eastern region, his family may have reported him missing or something but. Most of them wander about and could be found far from their home, because they cannot remember or find their way even in familiar environments. Some at times would do strange things that will leave people wondering where they got the strength from, for example an old and frail or ill looking old lady found on top of a house or a tall tree one morning. I hope this poor mans relatives will come forward to let the media and the public know the suffering this man has been putting up with. May I appeal to the police to take this man to hospital for assessment and care if there is anything like that in Ghana.
