THIS IS SOMETHING GHANAIANS SHOULD UNDERSTAND. IT HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH BEING MENTALLY ILL LIKE HAVING PSYCHOSIS, SCHIZOPHRENIA AND BIPOLAR DISORDERS. MR. ABOGYE NEEDS TO KNOW THIS AND GIVE US ACCURATE INFORMATION. IT IS A SHAME THAT A REGIONAL COORDINATOR FOR MENTAL HEALTH DOES NOT KNOW THE DISTINCTION BETWEEN MENTAL ILLNESS AND NEUROLOGICAL DISORDERS. I TRIED TO COME BACK TO GHANA TO HELP AND NOW YOU KNOW THE REST OF THE STORY. AS USUAL THEY DONT WANT US TO COME INTO THE SYSTEM AND WE ARE NOT WELCOMED.

  we are well aware of the distinction between mental illness and epilepsy and that should be managed by a neurologist but then we find ourselves in a situation where mental health units manage the condition and reported as such. It is the system not the personel as u may see it. I would kindly urge you to look at the GHS reporting tool on mental health conditions.

  kofi usa epilepsy in ghana is managed along side with other mental conditions.This has been the case for time immemoral.In the uk Learning disabilities is managed different from other mental illnesses but in ghana this is still treated alongside with all other mental conditions including epilepsy so why shaming Philip Aboagye.This information is for Ghananian public consumption not for people you out there looking for dollar.Come and serve mother GHANA AND stop being an unnecessary critic.HELLO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  Kofi you are dead right. People confuse epilepsy with mental illness. Epilepsy is mental disorder ( NMS) neurological , mental illness and substance misuse.
  On the training of psychiatrist, l rather prefer the training of more psychiatric and community psychiatric nurse, coupled with training of social workers , and more counsellors . We need to educate the communities on mental disorders, with emphasis on mental illness. There are no structure or systems in Ghana to address this. Unfortunately the Northern regions are left to their fate. Hmmm my brother it is a long walk, mental health care is expensive, however the causes of mental illness could be minimised if Goverments are able to create employment for its people.

  I applaud Kofi's ideas. We all know how people in Ghana behave when they have a title the suggest they have higher status. I would rather call them workers and from that there would be senior workers, team leaders, managers etc. we can do better with more hands even if semi-skilled or trained and be supervised by qualified and motivated staff. UK recently or a few years ago introduced mental health workers in the NHS working along side qualified nurses. Look for example, why let a psychiatric nurse or doctor wash, dress, feed or do mundane chores? In Ghana I met people that called Zoom nurses, my kid brother is one of them and they do go work under guidance and 'supervision'. My point is get as many of these people take them through basic training / workshop and they will contribute. Some would be paid and others volunteers. Don't laugh about volunteering. It's about time Ghanaians do more voluntareering!!

  The treatment given to the mental health patients (chaining) would rather worsen their state of mental health. How do they expect them to recover in such dehumanising conditions? Yes, they may have to be restrained either because they are violent or could run away but is chaining the best? It's reminiscent of slavery and very depressing to see such degrading treatment on the sick.

  wards( living areas) at lots of mental hospitals in USA have locks that have to be opened from outside so the sick people can't escape....kinda like prison but nicer
