It is definitely wrong for Mission school authorities to insist that Muslim students should participate in church activities. I quite clearly recall my High School days when the Muslim students were free to go about their own business while the rest of us attended church services or morning worship (assembly). At the morning assemblies, however, although Muslim students did not take part in the worship they were required by school policy to be in the vicinity of the assembly as major announcements for the day were made there. This worked out fine and nobody complained. It is worth mentioning, however, that in those days the school had a uniform policy which ALL students had to abide by. In other schols like Achimota for instance, there were prescribed uniforms for girls and although there were Muslim students in that school at the time they wore only the uniforms prescribed by the school; no hijabs! and there were no complaints then; so why now? What has changed over the decades that warrants the Muslim community's insistence on dressing the Muslim way in schools and at Examination centers in recent days? Are school uniforms and the 'prescription' way of dressing in schools of no consequence any longer? If so, what will be the next move?....The male muslim students should be allowed to wear 'Agbada' in class. How cool !!
