Scenes of the cable theft
About six (6) companies within the Takoradi Harbour enclave in the Western region are without power as a result of massive underground theft of cables belonging to the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG).
No arrest has yet been made in the incident.
Information gathered by StarrFMonline.com indicates that those suspected of the crime are on the run. The affected companies are the Ghana Cement company (GHACEM), Flour Mills, Ghana Bauxite Company and others.
The cost of the stolen cables, according to Nelson Asiemenu, the ECG’s Regional Network Controller is about GHS200, 000.00. He said it will take a day or two to get it fixed and hopefully restore power to the affected companies.
Describing the situation as terrible, he pleaded with the affected companies to bear with the ECG since they are working assiduously to get the situation rectified.
Addressing the media on the issue, Asiemenu urged the general public to assist the ECG in their monitoring activities.
“What we tell them when we embark on community engagement is to get them to understand that they need to own the network if for nothing at, all this is a state company ...and it is a company owned by the state of Ghana, so we all have a role to play to ensure that this company survives,” he said.
He added: “What happened is quite unfortunate and we will do everything possible within our power in collaboration with the Police Service to ensure that we apprehend the culprits.”
He said initial evidence available to them will lead to the arrest of the culprits.
